It's a real shame Mediatek doesn't share source code. Would definately consider buying a phone with a MTK chipset if they did.

What are the benefits of them sharing the source code, as I have this phone and am curious.

      • +1

Having the source code available means

        • the software can be audited for security holes,
        • extra features can be added to the existing vendor software, and
        • existing software (i.e. LineageOS, PixelExperience, Google Camera, etc etc) can be modified to work on your device
        • because of point above, you can receive support well after the manufacturer has stopped supporting it

I personally buy my devices on three criteria now: they have to have an IR blaster, have band 28, and must have source code released and a fairly active dev community.

I had to compromise on Band 28 but my last two phones were a Mi5 and a Mi6 as the price was too good to pass up. Both were on custom ROMs as MIUI shat me up the wall.

    • It's probably the biggest problem with this phone. I don't want the source, but, not having the source means that there's not a very good community for sideload aps (like the Google Camera project). Otherwise this phone has been perfect for me. Note: like all cheaper phones, the photos that you get with this will be disappointing compared to flagships; my wife's S10 takes infinitely better photos - if that matters to you.

Wife Samsung Galaxy S10, husband Umidigi F1, sounds fair..

I'm in the same basket, missus needs it to take photos of the kids so its worth it. I really don't need a good camera and mid range provides everything I require.

          • @Buyingcrap: Same here.. wife phone takes the photos of the family, therefore I didn't don't really need the camera on mine

          My wife drives a 2014 i30, I drive a 2002 Jazz…

Android 9, NFC, band 28…..mice phone, MediaTek soc isn't an issue if people just want a phone and use playstore for apps

    • Don't forget it's best feature, battery life + screen.. considering its not AMOLED it sure does it a great job, and 1080p I think is the sweet spot for this size display with the 5150mah battery

You can get an F1 Play for $40 more, much better deal!

I have and i love it! amazing camera !

      • Which camera app do you use ?
I find the focusing slow with the included camera app.

    • Link please?

  • Cheapest I've seen it so far.

Might get one as a back up back up phone or for a relative.

  • Good price, they might be dropping the price before F2 hits the market.

  • only problem to me is there is no 3.5mm headphone jack.

    • +1

There is. Sound quality is medium though

  • Camera is sub par.. produces great images in good lighting with still subjects. If you need to photograph moving objects don't bother. Otherwise amazing phone, has been cheaper in the past however (grey import though)

    • +1

Yeah, totally agreed. It takes ages to focus on the object. But the image quality is not bad. Wondering if that's a software issue.
