Work wear required clothes for a cleaner job

Might be getting a job soon so need to find some work clothes that the job requires.

Just generic long sleeve shirt, long pants and enclosed leather shoes.

Those are what it says exactly in the email.

No hard hat or safety goggles required I think they are provided just the three items above.

Hard ones to find are the work shoes aka leather enclosed shoes (doesn't need to be steel toed just enclosed) and cheap long pants.

I found some $9 - $12 long sleeve shirts so unless you know them cheaper that should be good but the shoes are definitely hard to find cheap and the long pants.

No dress code really required just good cheap but good quality bargains.

Can't wait to start working again and not leech off centrelink any more.

So what is the best shop for this?

I bought some stuff from big w and target but they were not on sale but they are emergency in case I get called on for training asap so I can still return them if I find a better deal and will probably need a second pair anyway just in case.

I would be weary of going all out on everything before starting the job. Not because you may/may not get it, but because I often find the dress codes set for workplaces are not what everyone working there wears. Always more casual than what is stated. On the same token though you want to set a good impression on the 1st day/weeks/months.

tldr; I just went round in circles.

      No I get ya.

It is always good to be conservative than over conservative or whatever the word is I'm blanking now.

I just went and bought something really fast because they gave me short notice about 6 hours to go and buy the clothes for preparation for the next session so I had not much time to go out and get something as stores were closing (only have target, big w and a Workwear store near my place unless I go to the mountaineering and camping stores which are even more expensive.

If I go to Penrith or Parramatta I have plenty more options from kmart to Lowe's to a bunch of other stores and selection so doing a proper shop and research now and going to return what I bought because I definitely over paid for a lot of these items and have no idea if they are even the super rugged kind.

Any ways I want to own a really strong and rugged durable pair of work clothes for any renovation and garden work I might do around the house in future or for crawling into the roof space to clear some dead animals etc which I know I will have to do.

A person should always own a suit, a pair of work wear or tradie gear and some comfortable home clothes maybe even pajamas.

Those three sets of items cover all if not most of your daily and lifelong needs.

But yeah getting back on topic I definitely need what ever is considered standard work regulations for a cleaner but just long sleeve shirt, long pants and enclosed leather shoes at this point anything PPE like gas masks, hard hat, goggles and even gloves I believe are all provided by the company.

Wondering if any tradies or cleaners might know more about this and can chime in on what they have had to purchase or personally provide while working as said cleaner or tradie.

  • Seems like any black leather shoes will do.
I suggest also thinking of comfort.
Black shoes are an exception to the above as you will always find a use for black leather shoes.
Depending on your budget but leather shoes probably from about $50.

    • No idea honestly what I need just says enclosed leather shoes I am assuming for protection against liquids more than hard debris falling or physical accidents.

      • Also remember that steel toe shoes are tax deductible, general leather shoes are not.
        Maybe consider non-slip sole.

Long sleeve hi-vis polo shirts, drill pants and safety shoes from Kmart/Aldi is about ~$60.

    • Got some links for them?

My nearest Kmart is around the Penrith, Blacktown and Parramatta area if you need to check stock via postcode.

      • Just look up mens workwear on kmart website for all styles

        • Cheers thanks will do.

not leech off centrelink any more

Great news, always good to get them off your back.

However Centrelink may still contribute towards the cost of purchasing work clothing, I know that they used to a few years back.

    Doesn't hurt to ask.

    • Good thinking I should enquire.

I am with a job access provider or job active I forget but they are called Sarina Russo and operate mainly in western Sydney I believe.

No idea if they can reimburseme for work clothing but would be nice as some of the items are not cheap shoes mainly.

  • Jeans are long pants.

Hiking boots or similar are often leather or "leather-like". They just want you to have an enclosed shoe that is strong.

    GL with the job.

    • Thanks.

Unfortunately they made clear that jeans are not allowed no idea why so it gave me the impression they want something very work safe or work oriented otherwise yeah I am set.

As for the enclosed shoe I have one but has a zipper on the side but it is work labelled and very tough so I hope this counts as what their dress code needs for safety and other occupational standards and regulations.

      • Most of our safety boots where I work have a zipper for quick removal.

blue WorkWear pants are $30 at K-Mart and you can use them for other stuff if the job doesn't pan out.

If you have the wrong clothes just remember "Sorry, I'll sort it out before the next shift".

Also, as a cleaner, shirts, pants and shoes are PPE so a tax deduction. Keep your receipts. Also the laundry is a deduction. I think it's $2 or $3/week

          Cheers thanks.

Might make a trip to my nearest kmart then.

          The target shoes were

          https://www.target.com.au/p/pilbara-driller-steel-cap-safety…

https://www.target.com.au/p/pilbara-bunker-steel-cap-safety-… (same brand but different model with a zipper only one my local had)

Was about $124 altogether so if I can find something better for cheaper I might return it back.

The stuff I bought from big w was a bit better

I got 2 x $50 core tradie pants and 2 x $12 long sleeve tradie shirts.. Honestly the quality seems really good on both items tried them out in the fitting room and I am happy keeping then unless I find them cheaper somewhere in store or online

I also ordered 2 x $9.95 drill cargo work pants in 2 different colours plus $9.95 flat rate shipping from Workwear Hub so will try that and if quality is good enough I might keep them and not return the other ones.

Honestly I see these work expenses as a good investment and rather get quality than cheap quality which is more possible in a budget find but I can't get the ozbargainer out of me yet it is deep and heavily ingrained.

    Try rivers for shoes.
    https://www.rivers.com.au/shop/australian-standard-work-boot…
$40 might be able to get $10 off with new customer code (?)

    • I might return the target one and grab this instead.

If I can find my recent rivers purchase I think there is a $5 off coupon as well cheers thanks dasher86.

      • At $5 difference go for overall comfort. You'll thank me after standing for 8 hours.

        • 100% that is what my mind is telling me. So looking for the best feeling one and must durable. But comfort is definitely the best.

  • Seriously try any local Vinnies or Salvo shops

Quite often see brand new workwear

    • My local didn't have any unfortunately I checked.

Gumtree would be the next step or Facebook but honestly the risk of scams is too high these days I have been scammed many times trusting and believing too much in people.
