Family Sedan Suggestions/Advice < $15k

Hi guys,

I am looking to buy a used sedan for me and the family to use. Dont have a high budget so looking at $15K at the max. Not more than 6 years old. I plan to use it for as long as I can.

We really like the Camry because of its size and boot space. (Needs to fit a pram and still have space for, lets say, a couple of full duffle bags for trips).

I have looked at Carsles and Carsguide and can get the below cars within my budget. Just looking for advice based on your personal experiences as I dont have many ppl I know IRL to ask…

  • 2014-2016 Camry with >100K on odometer at the top end of my budget
  • 2014/15 Toyota Aurions with >100K on odometer at the top end of my budget
  • 2013-2015 Nissan Pulsar ST B17 Series 2 Auto again >100K
  • VW Jetta at around 12K
  • >2013 Honda Accord again with >100K

    • Why? So you can have a lower build quality, worse on fuel, mildly higher performing car?

You won't go wrong with a Camry. Great for a young family.

    Camry

Aurion if you want the V6

Wouldn't bother with the others, they're smaller

A VF Commodore Evoke isn't a bad option either

  • 17/18 kia cerato.

The extra money spent on Camry/aurion is worth it in the long run. They’re good for 500000kms.

    Aurion.

  • If you're after practicality, consider wagons too. Outbacks are not a bad option, have a few problems (like every car) but are super useful (and can do some mild off roading if you feel like being a little adventurous).

Camrys are fine, functional cars. Nothing bad about them as far as I know, just nothing amazing IMO. Wouldn't waste my time on a pulsar with Nissans CVT, I've heard of a few issues with them.

VWs in that price point are nice, but could be a little costly to maintain as kms get up there. They drive really nicely though - my partbers father has a Mk7 Golf, and I was amazed at how nice of a commuter car it is.

Aussie stuff is just a bit meh. I've owned a heap of Falcons, and they're nice enough cars, but they're not THAT well made, not good on fuel. Not a horrible option thats for sure, and probably the most fun option (FG XR6, VE / VF SV6). There is a 4 cylinder Falcon if you do want the extra size compared to the other mid sized cars, with decent fuel economy.

Me and my partner were looking for a 4wd a year or so ago, and I was pretty set on the outback based on practicality and function, but ultimately ended up getting a Mitsubishi Challenger as its a 'proper' 4wd, with diff locks etc. I'm glad we went that way, because it has been useful. I ended up buying an '00 outback because I really liked the size of them, and its a great daily drive, plenty of room to carry stuff etc.

  • Either of the Toyotas or the Accord.

    Pulsar is a size smaller.

Jetta will be a roll of the dice for reliability (I have a Skoda which has similar mechanicals)

Also, have a look at the Nissan Altima. I like them and had a great run with my U13 Bluebird.
