Duty Free Item

guys, when you bought duty free items before your departure date, example you go to dfs (http://www.dfsgalleria.com/en/sydney/liquor/spirits) shop and buy the liquor, normally you can take the item but they also seal in the plastic bag. normally they said you need to declare the item in the airport.
have anyone ever to be asked by the immigration officer to show this duty free item?

  • Sure, they rip the paperwork off the bag when you go through. Why would you want to hang on to the paperwork anyway? You could cause trouble for the store and yourself if customs thinks the goods haven't been exported.

But why bother? You can also arrange to collect after passing through customs. Also don't be fooled by "duty-free". Sometimes you can find stuff cheaper in duty-paid stores.

      Agreed re: cheaper elsewhere.

The only two things that are guaranteed to be cheaper duty-free is grog and durries.

  • I've been throught duty free a few times and they have never allowed me to pick up my purchases at the shop. I pay for it, then pick it up after I go through the departure gate before the customs.

That way, it is ensured that you do not buy it and give it to a local that is not travelling overseas. I'm surprised that they allowed you to take your item with you.

the reason i am asking this, because i saw people out from that shop then open the bad immediately. thats person bought 2 bottle of whiskey

  • If you are buying within Australia then it's not worth going to a dedicated "duty free" shop. You can buy almost anything and have the tax refunded at the airport. Google "Tourist Refund Scheme" for more info.
