Brazilian Aircraft Carrier São Paulo– from $1.89m ($1.275m USD) + Shipping

Since the original post has been unpublished I'm reposting it here - note this is actually a real deal, available to sophisticated, private OzB investors

According to this source, for the price of a 4 bedroom house in Hurstville, you can now grab yourself what it seems to be a bargain of a decade – an aircraft carrier Sao Paulo. Impress your colleagues, sail on Sydney Harbour, take your friends for ocean fishing, party on the deck or even visit legally New Zealand (as this is not a nuclear ship) in a style.

Commissioned by the French Navy in 1963, sold in 2000 to Brazilian government for $12m USD, so practically you’re buying it for 1/10th of the last deal price. For comparison, the pride of our fleet, recently built aircraft carrier landing helicopter dock HMAS Canberra cost over $1.5 billion.

Tech specs - 24,200 tonnes displacement, 265m length and amazing power of 126,000 hp (94,000 kW). Impressive to 7,500 nautical miles (13,900 km) on a single refuelling. Can accommodate over 1000 sailors, which means plenty of space for your growing family. Fun part - its four 100 mm turrets, on a good day, should be able to reach shooting range in Auburn, more or less.

Now, that plane thingy. It’s an aircraft carrier with 40 planes capacity, however it’s highly unlikely Brazil will sell it with any planes, so you’re left with massive empty hangar - over 150m long and 22-24m wide. Obviously, the easiest and most tempting is to apply for a couple of credit cards, collect points and buy your own planes and helicopters, however, my calculations show that space can be divided and organised, without strata/council permission, to accommodate up to 2000 students. At $150 per person per week, moored next to the university – it has potential to become the ultimate OzB high yield investment vehicle ship.

Not so good bits. First, since purchased, Brazil spent over $100m to keep it seaworthy – means it’s likely to be more expensive to maintain than your beemer. Second, your local mechanic is unlikely to have spare parts, so you’ll need to import from Europe (worth calling French military bases in New Caledonia, though). Third, NSW Boat License likely doesn’t cover aircraft carriers, please contact RMS prior to purchase. Finally, it’s not the latest and shiny model, people are likely to notice/comment.

General link to Brazilian Ministry of Defense provided – I’d be grateful if there are any Portuguese speakers who can dig out the correct link to the auction/bidding page.

Not my first post, so be ruthless, cynical and sarcastic. Although, no silly comments like "thanks op, just bought two" please - as there's only one available for sale!

With Sydney scrap steel prices around 10 cents per kilogram https://www.currentscrapmetalpricesaustralia.com/Scrap-Metal… , this floating pile of metal could be worth $2.4 million, giving a profit of half a million dollars. That's not including the copper, brass and stainless steel.
I would ram it into Bondi beach and call a scrap merchant.

Brilliant. I'm glad people agree this is actually a bargain, even if it's an aircraft carrier not eneloops or something

    • actually, it is obtainable, Brazil is keen to sell it to private companies/individuals ;)

      • @Skramit bought the entire stock 5 hrs 51 mins ago.

  • How many eneloop AA do I need to run this?

  • It's a 1963 aircraft carrier, think I'll skip this one op. The thing probably only takes diesel, not eneloops, what am I supposed to do with all these eneloops from Dicks?
Seriously disappointed here op, came here expecting a price error or something for a recent aircraft carrier.

  • Suggest we get together, buy it and sail it into the South China Sea for a laugh…

  • And look out for Jacking. Union or otherwise…

Are you sure this ship is Brazilian, it has a landing strip.

I'd buy it if I was a multi-millionaire, then get it moved onto a large property in the mountains where it can be converted into a badass and confusing mansion.
