Done. FYI, appreciate the feedback and I corrected it quickly, but voting a deal from a new guy down just because I missed the price is not a good way to ecourage new people. At least give a new guy a couple of minutes to fix before the negative vote.

  • Considering most 2TB USB2.0 desktop drives are now $100 or less most of the time, I don't smell much of a bargain here at all. Shrug.

    • I assume the bargain lies within the "Intelligent Touch-Sensitive Surface"?

    • +1

      it's the design

I personally have the cheap Samsung 2Tb drive, but does not look anywhere near as nice as this unit.
The touch sensititive front can be set up to launch programs and backups and that may be useful to some.
I also looked at StaticIce and it confirmed that this price is good for THIS drive.
Agree, if you are after the Hyundai of Hard Drives you should probably buy the Samsung like me and leave this premium drives for others. Either way, I thought it was a deal worth sharing as not everyone wants the cheap stuff, and premium stuff at a good price may be of interest.

      • Firstly, this is a bargain because for the exactly same product its a good price. With that said, as compare to other 2TB USB 2 not really a bargain, as for "premium" drive… i cant believe people still fell for this bull… the drive probably come out from the same southeast asia factory assembled by same underpaid workers as the others "cheap" drive. Come on, you pay more for this drive because you need to paid for the bloated software you dont ever use, pay for the trademark Lacie, and Pay for the endorsement of Starck.

foobar, You are buying a designer designed product so the premium is justifiable

This drive is designed by Philippe Starck who's one of the most successful product designer coming from France. Some people pay a premium for a designer piece and I have to say I am one of them, with a range of Philippe Starck's products I've collected over the years, from watches to table and chair, even my couch at home was designed by him.

I've been using this same hard drive for over a year now and it just makes my desk a little bit more interesting than having a normal conventional plastic box. On top of this, it IS very well constructed with a cast metal casing which feels indestructible and it is very quiet, as I leave it on 24/7 (it acts as the 'time machine' for my iMac). To be honest with you, I do not use the touch function at all but it does have a really cool projector like in the shape of Starck's signature cross. I guess the price justify itself anyway because it is a LaCie hard drive which are usually very well built.

  • Wow what a beautiful drive. Pity I would only see it for a few minutes a week when I take it out of the cupboard and plug it in to do a backup. On second thought, I think I'll give it a miss. ;)

  • pity it's only usb2.0, if it was usb3.0 i would be all over this like, well, broden all over anything cheap/free!

  • Has anyone used a Lacie before? I've heard good reviews about them but haven't actually tried one..

    • I've had 5 LaCie hard drives in total and they are all very well built, although they do usually cost more. I had a WD drive that died on me in less than a year and another Samsung one that drops out from time to time. I work in a design studio and I would only use LaCie drives for back ups at work.

You do realise that Lacie don't make hard drives, don't you?

        • Yup but I also don't know who makes the hard drive in my WD & Sumsung which failed. I guess it's the same with everything nowadays, how Apple uses intel chips and Sony TV uses Samsung screens (or they jointly produce them). I guess the extra $$ you are paying for in a LaCie drive is more for the enclosure which usually are more well built which protects the hard drive better.

        • Interestingly LaCie USB external drives have mostly been tested as faster than average. Not all USB bridging circuits were created equal.

For me, this drives needs too much work cleaning. ;)

What Chinotto means to say is that LaCie drives are so freaking beautiful they attract far gentler treatment while your ordinary looking WDs and Seagates and Vantecs get knocked about, therefore LaCie achieves supposedly lower failure rate via cunning manipulation of its users - reliability through aesthetics! :D

You find most Lacie drives are Hitachi.
(From varied experience opening them up for faults etc)

          …with some Maxtor too.

  • Good deal mate. I have been using the lacie hard drives for last 3 years. No issues with them

  • I am not going to deny that this HD is a good price for this particular brand and I am usually all for paying a little extra for something that is well designed - but unfortunately not when said object will spend the vast majority of its life completely out of view.

Still a good price though - but not for me!

  • What's the make of the drive in it?

    No USB 3.0, deal-breaker.

  • Hmm. So the front of the drive contains a mimetic poly alloy that activates shortcut buttons whenever it samples you by physical contact. Think I get it now.

  • Good deal. And what a sexy hard drive! I'd spend an extra $20 for looks and quality
