Retroflag GPi Case $95 + Shipping @ Core Electronics

210

The Retroflag GPi case allows you to build a retro gaming handheld with a Raspberry Pi Zero (I recommend Pi Zero W). Assembling and configuring the software (RetroPie, Recalbox or Lakka) is pretty straightforward. Also, it runs on AA batteries to complete the retro gaming experience.

I picked up one of these last week from Core Electronics for ~$113 + shipping. At $95 + shipping (~$7), it's a pretty good deal.

The resolution is a very retro 320x240.

If you use RetroPie, you'll have to do some additional setup such as the safe shutdown script. I believe Recalbox and Lakka have released pre-built images with everything already setup.

  • Pi Zero is slow to load, if you really like retro games I recommend to get a LDK game or something similar.

    • LDK?

    • I realise the size of the cartridge would dramatically increase but would be more inclined to get one if it could run a Pi 3 or better. Hoping for a separate cartridge adaptor or an updated version of this that can.

      • There are some folks working on getting it working with a Pi compute module. The cartridge is a bit bigger but not by much.

        • Thanks. I'm sure I've seen somebody else also successfully get a more powerful single board computer to run on the case but it looked incredibly fiddly.

  • Free pickup for newcastle, you need to put your postcode as somewhere in newcastle and it gives you a pickup option

  • I built one of these from scratch, but it looks awesome

This one is fantastically easy by comparison!

  • Is there a complete guide that instructs a complete noob like myself willing to try this?

I have installed Retropie on my raspberry pi successfully with a guide and that was nerve wrecking enough lol

Not sure what you intend to play om this, but remember there is the well reviewed Bittboy v3 for a lot less than this.

Or if you want shoulder buttons, the go version.

Yeah, go this route people and save yourself a lot of frustration (not to mention money; $95 for just a case versus ~$40 AUD for a retro gaming handheld that runs 20 different console emulators).

The BittBoy/PocketGo are cheaper, work out of the box, come with a ton of pre-installed ROMS and run ROMs just as good, if not better than a Raspberry Pi Zero.

I have the BittBoy v3.5 myself and it's an epic little unit. I haven't seen any emulation/CPU/framerate/tearing issues and I've tried probably a hundred different titles across all of the most popular consoles it supports. It's just brilliantly simple and runs everything. The IPS screen is exceptionally good for such a cheap device.

Though for what it's worth, I would order them from Pocket-go.com as I believe they have the latest revision of the Bittboy (these things are frequently relaunched with newer firmware).

  • What systems will this be able to play? And how much would the full set up be to get playing?

Nice! But I'll stick with my hacked psp that I rarely play.
