Oppo F1S no longer receiving Android Updates. What are my options?

I bought an Oppo F1S from JB Hifi around 3 years ago.
Had the battery replaced for free under warranty at the start of this year.

Now it is not receiving Android Updates, and simple apps like McDonalds don't work anymore.
The phone is otherwise working fine, just wish it would get more updates.

I was thinking the following options:
- Installing a custom rom. (I have rooted a Google Nexus tablet before, but I nearly bricked it, so my technical skills aren't the best (Although I could follow instructions I guess)
- Buying a new android phone (although, if they won't be supported in 3 years, what's the point?)

What do you suggest I do? Any other suggestions?

Sell the phone to recoup cost and buy a new phone is your other third option.

Based on eBay listings made in the last month, this phone can still sell for around $70~120

Backup everything and installing a custom rom would be my best bet. Worst case scenario you break it and you have to buy a new phone. Best case you learn something new, you get a workable phone too.

Nowadays it is pretty easy to install custom roms, I used to struggle a bit installing Cyanogenmod lol

    • These are helpful instructions. Thanks.

3 years is a good life. Give it to the next homeless person you meet and buy a new handset.

I would have thought three years of updates is standard for a budget Android phone?

    • Yes but how old was it already when OP bought it.

I did some Googling before making my comment and I believe it was released in 2016

    • You say "Budget Android Phone".
If I bought a flagship phone like a Google Pixel, would that be supported for longer?

The original pixel is getting android 10…that's 3 major upgrades.

3 years? get a new phone

  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
Still in two minds. I guess I don't want a wasteful life with churning through phones every 3 years. But if I sell it I guess the phone is still being used, and someone comes out with a still ok phone, win-win.

There are also businesses that take buy old and phones like Mazuma mobile if you're too lazy to list them on ebay.

They won't pay you very much but at least the phone isn't going straight to the trash heap.

  • I say, if you don't install/download a lot of things, you should be safe.

If you download apps, then that's a different story all together

As an update by the way, I ended up buying the TCL Plex for $249 (Glad I waited for such a great bargain).
And then putting my Oppo up on ebay. I'm surprised it sold for over $100! Win win all round.

    Thanks for all your suggestions.
