Half Price Optus Sim Only Mobile Plans for Transferring NBN Customers

201

I got the dreaded NBN letter.
Have been a relatively happy Optus cable customer, so decided to stick with them for NBN.

I got a bonus for signing up to Optus NBN deal today - I got 50% off the monthly charge for a mobile sim only plan.
You can pick the $59 per month plan (contract for 12 months), and get 50% off - so you only pay $29.50 per month. That's the 80gb/mth data in Aus, with 2gb zone 1 roaming.
Or the $79 per month plan comes down to $39.50 per month - that's 120Gb/mth data in Aus, with 4gb zone 1 roaming.

Since I had rolled off the $39 Telstra deal from last year with the JB gift card, this seems to be a pretty good deal (pay 50c/mth more, get 100Gb more data, some international calls, plus some global roaming data if I happen to need it).

Mobile signal coverage may vary in your area, but I'm in Sydney metro and they are all about the same for me.

Edit: I rang the NBN sales line to get this deal, and they offered me this as a bonus when trying to sell me the NBN deal as well.

Sorry mate but a 1/2 price deal would be $20 for 40gb. I’ve got 80gb on a $40 plan. Optus are wasting your time and money.

Weird that OP would be talking about current retail prices when talking about 50%, and not talking about 50% off what smaugasbord is currently paying.

except you're now on an inferior network.

      Depends where you live really.

There might be some exceptions, but I'm talking in general…

        • it's not really superior if it doesn't work for you.

          • @onlinepred:

if it doesn't work for you.

It does work for me, better than Optus or Vodafone which both have black spots here.

@jv: So perhaps it would be dependant on where one lives

              • @Nand0sx: There might be some exceptions, but I'm talking in general

                • @jv: @Nand0sx I think @jv is trying to tell us that Telstra generally has better coverage in the places where Telstra has better coverage.
As for my place (mid-ring S Sydney), Telstra coverage is woeful and during my morning commute their network is so congested along the train line between Hurstville and Wolli Creek to be unusable.
Meanwhile, Optus and Voda both have good coverage in this area

                  • +1

@CacheHunter: Coverage is not the same as congestion.

                    • @jv: maybe, but when the network is so congested you can't get a connection or it's so slow you can't even browse text only web pages without timing out, it's no better than not having coverage

What kind of ripoff 'Optus' NBN contract did you have to sign to get this average mobile deal?

    • The one that is 50% more than other ISPs.

    • +1

The $100 NBN sign up fee is the kicker.

      • Lol

  • It is a shame Optus sim only plans have gone downhill recently. I currently have 80gbs of data and 4gb roaming data for $39/month

  • -1

No,. Will never sign up NBN, dont expect to hook me up.

    Hahahaha

    Anyway, thanks op.

    • Why?

      • Just personal preference.

I have 2 plans with optus 400G data in the family pool, it is more than enough for me to use for a whole month.

Plus this 400G data is portable, it means i can even share the data for my kids to watch Netflix during the trip.

I will never need NBN…. Hahah

        • But you pay more than $100 a month for the 2 plans I guess?

          • @ttkc: That was the deals from last year.

After the iphone and ipad were sold, I m paying about 70bucks for 400G portable data.

Hence i have unlimited phone calls including international number, unlimited roaming call&message and roaming 2G data

            • @pzhon: How do you use this on your home? Do your use a 4g modern?

              • @onlinepred: Yes i do use 4g modern which is much faster than ADSL+

                • @pzhon: Just not faster than NBN.

                  • @onlinepred:

                    Just not faster than NBN

Speedtest wise it can be (my Telstra 4g at home rarely drops below 200mbps, where as my NBN bare drops below 92mbps)

But the NBN for real world download speed, is quicker. I can grab a 1gb file from Europe/US in under 2mins, 4g is closer to 5mins,

                  • @onlinepred: On paper, NBN is probably faster. However i found my 4G is not bad in the daily use

                    • @pzhon: Yea I get through about a terabyte a month, and also I game so 4g isn't an option. It's great it works for you though. My NBN sits at around 7ms point to Sydney from Brisbane and on average is at 93Mbps. 4g hovers at around 39Mbps with Telstra at my house and latency of over 14ms.

            • @pzhon: It’s not really portable,

Was in Port Douglas last year. Optus reception was non existent.

              • @jv: Could be correct in your area.

Optus is in full signal in where i live.

Also i did road trip from Mel to Sydney with my family, i shared the data to my kids for watching Youtube and the signal were so great!.

That’s what the libs said about the internet. “We will never need 100Mbps” and turned NBN FTTP to FTTN. And now look at our NBN. You’re not the lib’s byproduct are you?

          • +1

@TomGum: How much do you think the country should've spent to bring 100Mbps to every address in the country?

            • +3

              @Punkboy: A little more…

            • +1

@Punkboy: A lot less than maintaining the fttn elephant. Why else do you think they moved to fttc?

              • @TomGum: Fttc is a logical stepping stone that will cost a hell of a lot less then fttp for a population interested in a tax payer subsidy to watch Netflix and do low latency gaming and who will most likely move to 5g in any event.

                • @Punkboy: Fttc was always the most sensible choice.

There’s a theory that micro mesh 5g/wifi on power poles up the street will be the future.

@Zippy7 OP - could i please have the nbn sales line phone number and could you tell me how much nbn50 and nbn100 is per month? Thanks.

  • Got the same deal last week - I tried initially over the NBN sales web chat and they offered me 20% off new plans only. I called up and spoke to someone and they straight away offered me the 50% off deal. So from my experience, you may be more likely to have success with the Optus phone sales team than over web.
