I purchased this router a few years back. Initially had to send it back to ASUS as one ethernet port stopped working within 3 months. No idea if they replaced or repaired.

Then 3 months ago had a lot of DHCP dropouts consistently. Found a lot of people had similar issues, with an ASUS Representative on Whirlpool/net forums pretty much agreeing it's an issue and something ASUS is looking to patch. In the end, I couldn't get it fixed as out of warranty and new firmware and changing settings didn't work. Ditched it for a Netgear router. I'm on an HFC connection 100/40 with AussieBB.

As others have said, including on forums, it's been bullet proof for them. Guess I got unlucky but can't recommend this router.

    • I’m on HFC using this router too and fixed the DHCP dropouts by changing the DHCP refresh frequency
Looks like a common issue on whirlpool so glad that fixed it for me

      • Do you mean this discussion re AussieBB and the router? https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2785855
What did you change your refresh frequency to? I occasionally get dropouts, and I just do a power-cycle and things go good again. Would be nice to know of a better workaround

        • +1

From memory it was either the general HFC discussion or the official Asus thread. Changed the frequency from Agressive to normal(?) and no dropouts since, where as it would drop every half hour or less

  • Great router. Had for couple years. I have NBN HFC and get 46Mbps on both 2GHz and 5GHz. Get same speed when hooked up with ethernet cable. Two story house and get signal in all rooms.

  • Have this router with Merlin firmware, 2 storey house WiFi is fine, no Poe though

    • I think most routers don't have PoE though. I bought a separate TP Link switch with 4 PoE for my IP Cameras.

  • Absolute noob here. This would work with BYO to ABB?

    • +1

Any idea what type of connection you have?

      • an internet one? lol i joke

NBN will be installed at the same time (Optus cable currently)

    • +1

I have FTTC with ABB and confirm it works great.

  • Can recommend. Bought it recently, and with AiMesh inbuilt, get full signal upstairs (86 as the main downstairs, and this as the node and connected via Ethernet through powerpoints).

  • I have a small house, is it worth getting the AC86U over AC68U?

Currently running on Telstra NBN, with the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 1 running as a router.

    • Depends on what you do. In my 2 storey house AC68U worked fine with tablets and phones.

      • bought anyway.

Signal keeps dropping out with Telstra Smart Modem. Mainly used for outdoor Camera, usual netflix on tv, multiple devices etc. single storey house

        • I’ve been using an old Thompson router for years Full of security holes as hasn’t been updated in years , the Telstra ones are also full of security holes

Good thing asus constantly updates firmware even on this router

  • My issue currently is with the move to HTTPS for websites that the URL filtering won't work

Has anyone had the same or been able to solve?

  • Hi,
I'm currently still on ADSL (with lots of dropouts recently), so I'm looking to transition to NBN HFC (awaiting installation and connection with Fibremax), and as far as I know my current modem/router is a Netgear N3000 DGN2200v1 is incompatible.
Thus would this be a good deal to go on?
Or am I better off buying NBN compatible modem/routers on Gumtree? I would love an opinion on whether a Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 (Technicolour DJA0231) or a TPG (TP-Link Archer VR1600v AC1600) would be better to purchase? I'm unlikely to sign up to Telstra NBN in the near future given its cost. I don't need VoIP.

    • As you will be on HFC, you will be provided with an NTD (network termination device) which is your modem. Then you add this ASUS for your router and wifi needs.

      • hmm you sure (on HFC connections) the ntd is the modem?

        • That's what I've got (HFC) and I just plug in my router to the NTD.

          • @lomie: damn! silly me, that's the ONLY reason why i'm still using the telstra supplied sagemcom modem

  • I am using VDSL internet in my place. Is it okay to buy this one ?

    • This does not have a modem, which you need for VDSL This plus a cheap ex Telstra gen2 or 799vac is good. Though even the wifi on the Telstra modems is ok. It’s just this is a bit better range and very configurable if you need that.

  • I switched to this router from a TP Link D9 and haven't looked back. The usability of this plus the ease of flashing Merlin as an option makes this deal great value. Well worth the extra on top of TP Link product. This model is quite old but I can see it has lasted the test of time.

  • currently having the standard free router than my network company gave me, having nbn network. How is the set up process?

    • Setup is easy, mostly just a matter of changing default password then plug and play. It does however payoff to delve deeper into the settings as the ASUS has LOTS more features than generic ISP modem/router.

  • my two tm-ac1900 with ASUS stock firmware are still going strong… AI-Mesh is really nice :p , real time android monitor app is also very useful

    • Do you find aimesh is stable? I did not end up buying as forums suggested this was a recurring issue i.e. devices dropped by router

      • +1

I noticed the slave router drops sometimes (2~3 time per week?) but didn't impact on me… for gaming, this could be problem? but master router is solid (no reset for months already) so I leave it in the living room

      • btw, I actually used the repeater mode before ai-mesh, except the extra SSID is annoying, the repeater mode is also very solid and has no noticeable difference (even better) regarding bandwidth. If you don't mind the switch SSID at home and want solid working status, repeater mode is not bad :p

        • ta for feedback. i'm moving away from the wifi router +repeater / wifi router +extender lifestyle, want a mesh system with handover without paying too much as new tech keeps coming in

        • Should the repeater mode rebroadcast the same SSID and also give the 4 LAN port connections?

      • i think that issue is exagerrated, aimesh works for the most part, even orbis have drop outs nothing is perfect

  • I am on TPG HFC so will this work for me or nay?

    • +1

Yes and you have to use NBN connection box.

Wall socket -> NBN Connection box -> Wireless Router

  • Would this work as a replacement for the sagemcom Optus NBN HFC router with the original modem?

    • +2

Yes and you have to use NBN connection box.

Wall socket -> NBN Connection box -> Wireless Router

Note: If you are using VOIP phone, you must use your Optus modem for the phone.
So in this case I would setup like this:

Wall socket -> NBN connection box -> Optus NBN modem (Turn wifi off, DHCP ON) -> VOIP Phone & ASUS router for all Wireless devices (DHCP OFF)

      • +1

Cheers mate, this is a perfect set-up for me.

another plus point of ASUS routers is security, they are usually rated #1 for security if you're into securing network , etc

  • +1

    Thank you so much!
Been eyeing this off for a long time but never bothered cause i havnt been nbn'd yet. But happening in 3 months time and at this price might as well do it now!

  • Sorry for the noob question but would this work for Aussie BB NBN? Looking to switch over to NBN soon from Optus cable

    • read the comments on the other page my friend!

  • +1

For a normal home usage would a cheap router is fine or this one, what extra does this router gives for a home user only using netflix and kodi?

    • If their wired you'd be fine with most standard supplied models

  • +1

Good price, preowned AC2600 is about $110 on eBay.
But I'll wait a little bit and get a WIFI6 router on sale

Got so many WIFI devices now and I heard WIFI 6 802.11x can hold all of them and more happily:
    4 Echo dot and growing
    1 Echo plus
    2 Google home mini
    15 WIFI smart plugs
another 10 various xiaomi wifi products (cameras etc).
    several phones,
    several laptops
    surface pro
    desktop
    etc etc

    • I'm pretty sure 95% of use don't have that many wifi devices haha.
I have 20 active connections on my network, as long as its not traffic heavy devices, this unit will work fine.
I'm curious what you're running now? is yours unhappy?

      • I dont have any connection problem at the moment, have a Linksys EA8500 running DD-WRT , heard it can hold 128 devices happily. For speed it can do a stable 28MB/s from a long distance like 20 meters

It's just the WIFI 6 router would be running better when handling lots of devices according to the paper and is highly recommended for people of more than 50 connected devices . But it could be judt a selling trap

There's really good WIFI performance router like the Netgear X10 R9000 which can do 75MB/s easily.

Wifi 6/ax router does not necessarily faster than the above X10 which is ad.

WIFI 6 router from entry to high end has 1200 3200 6000 9000 11000 Mbps combined wifi speed I think , so people could pay 499 to get a WIFI 6/Ax router from hardly Norman and the speed is only 1200Mbps

        • I doubt those devices are all active together though…. At the minimum try to get your desktop on gigabit too.

  • By the way this router is supported by the Merlin custom firmware

    https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/screenshots

If it has the right hardware revision

    RT-AC68U (including revisions C1 and E1)

  • +1

Going to have to bite the bullet. My Netgear d7000 has been utterly painful for 3 years and now Netgear dropped support for it.

    • D7000 is a modem/router combo, AC68U is router only.

  • Does this allow changing VLAN tagging?

For HFC connection I need to Enable VLAN Tagged and set VLAN ID = 100, would this router work for this kind of configuration on HFC?

  • Can't get more than 5mb/s from a USB plugged into this thing.

  • I would recommend it as the ASUS stock firmware is crap compared to Merlin firmware - got a GT-ac5300 laying around as it’s firmware is not reliable. Using the RT-AC5300 version running Merlin on my main router setup 2nd RT-ac5300 in mesh.. very good wireless coverage…

Wondering if I could tweak anymore to improve FTTC connection - max 48/18 (50/20 plan) at all times

  • Is this better than the one Aussie broadband gives?
    Netcomm NF18ACV

    Thanks
