Most Seagate portables are Shuckable and I prefer them in desktop RAID as they are less noisy than 3.5inch

"Most Seagate portables are chuckable"? Why would you chuck a HDD? Lol

  • Surely these drives aren't well suited to a NAS though right? I shucked one of the older ones for my PS4 though back in the day.

    • Yep I also shucked one of these for my PS4. I never considered it for NAS though, does anyone have any experience with this?

Had 4x 3.5inch in RAID installed in my desktop and hated the grinding noise they make so moved them into my NAS. Swapped them by shucking 4x 2.5inch portables into my desktop which are almost silent and working great for past 3 years.

      • Fair enough. Not that I'm doubting your setup, but I thought most people would go for a 5400rpm 3.5" if they wanted something quieter than the louder/hotter 7200rpm drives as usually the 2.5" drives come at a premium (even if you're shucking). That being said with the new 2.5" NAS models, this might be the best option.

        • Got the 2.5" @ Office Works price match from memory $110ea, they turned out to be way more silent than 3.5" and maybe $10ea more which was worth it.

  • cheers , bought one for ps4

  • I can still remember the day I payed more than $100 for this. A promotion not long after it was released.

These ones most likely contain Rosewood drives. I would avoid putting anything important on them

    • how do we know which one has rosewood or not?

      • This drive in general is known to have them. I have two and with a quick search of the drive model reveals it’s a Seagate rosewood. I think they have a high failure rate and it’s next to impossible to recover anything

        • yeah i saw the youtube video about rosewood
but it is hard to know which has it or not.

can't believe seagate would damage their rep with these crap drives
considering what happening with the bad hdd from many years ago.

what is the benefit of rosewood for seagate
and why not just use the older tech that has always been used.

  • Thanks bought one.
