  • yeah if you like rice it's really not that good.

I had been eating rice from woolies and coles for years. until i had a chinese partner, we buy rice from the asian grocery shops no.

i didnt think i'd be able to the difference but yeah you can.

Can you name a couple of tasty lower cost brands I can look for in local asian grocery shops. I just mainly buy sunrice calrose, but I would like to try others.

    • Jasmine rice in Asian shops are more expensive (compared to half-price supermarket sale) but will give it a try

Isn't it from Vietnam? I read that's not great. Thailand is better. I prefer Aussie grown for safer product but I am only guessing with that.

    • oh I didn't notice but yes it's the product of Vietnam and Jasmine is not the predominant rice variety in there. Thanks for pointing out

  • I bought a 5kg bag of Jasmine last year, can't remember the Brand or which Store, but after a week it was full of Rice Weevils! They must have hatched out during the week in my Pantry.

I only buy Australian rice now.

    • oh no that's horrible…yes country of origin matters

Someone mentioned on Ozbargain before, they always put rice in the freezer for a while to kill off the wigglies. I don't need to at over 50, as I can barely see the rice grains.

  • I suggest buying rice from an Asian market. It's usually cheaper, comes in bulk and tastes much better.
