What Is Your Preferred Meditation/Mindfulness App

Hi Ozbargainers,

There have been a few headspace deals recently which got me thinking about what makes a good meditation app.

I started meditation with Headspace about 3 years ago and had an annual subscription. I used it regularly for 3 months then was bit on and off. It was a great intro to meditation.

Afterwards, I tried 1-2 free ones and then started using aware meditation (this deal https://www.cheapcheaplah.com/node/10625). It was ok

This year I subscribed to Waking Up. Overall it does not have enough content to justify annual subscription but it does have some good perspectives on meditation technique and purpose which I felt were helpful as someone who had been meditating for 1-2 years.

Ultimately, I feel headspace free 10 day course is a great intro and then any app which allows you to time 5-20min meditation sessions is good enough. I guess the key is to make it a routine which I find hard. The other thing I find hard is to get in the "zone" often I'm too distractable or too sleepy!

Keen to hear about others experiences.

I've made a poll with popular options for you to choose your favourite app.

Regards
DS

    Insight timer

  • Meditation Oasis. Started listening years ago via download and then the podcasts in the Apple Store. Never really ever bothered to swap. The podcasts are free.

  • Dominos.

EDIT: The pizza, not the game

Listening to someone speak is not meditation as I understand it, it's a relaxation exercise which people are selling for money.

The only app you may require to actually meditate, rather than pretending to, is a timer.

Relaxation exercises are beneficial and many people find them much easier than meditation because, you know, you aren't meditating, your using a product that keeps your mind entertained without actually doing the hard part.

  • Hemisync - full meditations with their technology guided and unguided and also ones for different purposes

you use their free daily song and then just reshuffle until you find one that suits or its $6 a month for entire archive of some really expensive programs

  • None. I do running meditation. I find it hard to sit still and meditate.

  • Smiling Mind FTW! Multi-platform (Apple, Android, & web), completely free, no ads, Aussie-accented narration for a change, suitable for a wide range of demographics, settings, & skill-levels… what's not to love? 😀

Edit: their academic rigour & evidence base is another big plus for me, personally, along with their genuine motivation for making Smiling Mind & continuing to develop it - check it! https://www.smilingmind.com.au/about-us
