Looking to Go with AussieBroadband for HFC NBN - Router Requirements?

Not a tech expert but when browsing potential product pages what are some of the technical stuff I should be looking out for?

One I've got based on initial research is this: TP-LINK Archer C3150 v2.1 Dual-Band AC3150 Wireless MU-MIMO Gigabit Router - would this work?

Lastly, what's the performance difference between something like the above and the one I can choose to buy from AussieBroadband?

(There's also a fixed home phone that I will have, would this affect my modem choice?)

nbn hfc = pair with any router, or modem with wan port

nbn voip home phone = stick with isp modem, if you don't want to fiddle with voip settings

performance difference = wifi strength coverage

    • Isn't VOIP just something like Skype?

your fixed home phone will no longer use copper phone line

your home phone will run through your nbn modem over voip aka voice over internet protocol

skype is a software , nothing to do with fixed line home phone

    • My home phone is still working using the old telephone line on HFC. Not sure when it will get cut-off so I'll need to figure out how to connect the phone to my router soon

    • nbn hfc = pair with any router, or modem with wan port

This can depend on the ISP, some (but not Aussie) require VLAN tagging which isn't supported by every router.

  • With HFC, when the technician comes to your property they will bring a NTD which is essentially a modem. You'll plug the NTD to the router. The modem is the property of NBN Co and cannot be taken away from the home.

  • I've got the NF18ACV with them and get max advertised speed over WiFi no problem anywhere in the one-bed flat. Don't need anything else unless you have a multi-floor house or bigger.

  • I have the TPLink and it’s a great modem and not too expensive. Works perfectly with ABB HFC.

  • Plan on waiting a while for number porting if your number is with a VoIP service. I moved from My Republic to Aussie Broadband last Monday AM. Still waiting for the port to take place.

Honestly if you're going to spend that much on a router go with a mesh system that includes a satellite/transmitter

  • Recently got ABB - did not opt for their modem and went out to buy my own. Ended up getting the Archer VR600v v2. Should set you back $180-220 depending on how and where you buy it.

If buying your own modem, must look for one with a phone port in the back. If you go to JB, TGG, OW, they won't have many of these VOIP enabled models on display. I bought mine from Officeworks.

Technician will come to install the NBN modem, you give them the modem/router and they'll connect the 2 together. Might take a few hours for ABB to recognise your connection but they'll confirm via SMS. VOIP gets ported later, took about 1.5 weeks to get it ported over so don't cancel your current provider until it's all good.

Setting up VOIP is on you if you bring your own but luckily the Live Chat is great. Have had some difficulties getting the modem and VOIP working and both times, Live Chat was handled brilliant. Their documentation needs an update for BYO modems. Very happy with their service so far.

    • I'm in the same situation right now, looking for a new modem/router. Need something with good range for a big-ish 2-storey house. Would you recommend the one you mentioned?

      • And how does it compare to the ASUS RT-AC68U Wireless-AC1900

  • I am in the same boat.

Looking for router with parental control and strongest WIFI signal for double stories home

    Anyone has suggestions?

Another question, will technician install the modem in the garage? Will iWIFI signal strong enough to reach upstair bedroom?

    Thanks
