Where to Find E27 to B22 Bulb Adapter Not Online? (Brick and Mortar)

I bought some new smart lights but they have Edison screw and my house has bayonet. I thought it would be quite simple to find them in a store without having to wait a week on shipping from ebay but for the life of me, I cannot find somewhere that stocks them (at least bunnings, jaycar, etc. don't list them on their stores online).

I live in Newcastle if that helps. Ikea is over 2 hours away so that's not an option just for some light fittings.

How about mitre something. It's weird Bunning doesn't have it.. maybe not listed online?
If me sometimes I buy from eBay for I filter to local seller, usually they have like Australia Post logo in the listing. And yes the stuff arrives in 2, 3 days

    • I'll have a look. Bunnings is not too far from me so I was going to pop in anyway. Not too sure where the closest mitre 10 is though.

I've read on these forums they are not legal/compliant in Australia, maybe that's why.

    • Wow really? Well supposedly Ikea sell them because all the lights they stock don't use the Australian standard fitting (I'm not sure which is standard)

  • Change the batten/fitting.

    • Yeah I was thinking that as an option but I'm only renting so I would have to change all of the fittings in the house and/or ask the landlord.

      • Landlord won't do it unfortunately. I'd just forget about the smart lights for now.

I've been in the same position. Bought E27 thinking a house built in the 90s wasn't going to be an issue. Had to wait a year to use them. Worth it.

It's really stupid for someone to came up with the idea of two different fitting. I want to know who invented them and knock his her head

Ismail al-Jazari in the 13th century and Thomas Edison in the 20th.

    • might be a bit difficult both people are long dead.

Guess you coudl find their graves and do something symbolically

    • It's all due to patents. Easier to just make a different fitting than to pay the royalty fee the patent-holder demands.

    • It probably has manufacturing implications. It's a lot harder (back then) to manufacture an E27.

And do the same to whoever decided to wire 5 & 7 pin round trailor plugs differently and then along comes the flat style variations. While we are at, RS232 and phone connections. Wait… Aus. England, Euro and U.S. GPO's. Then there's Metric. US. AFS, Etc. Spanners. 1.5, 9, 12 volt batteries…
Oh. Never mind. As you were.

  • Sorry, no stock available.

  • Buy item locate in Australia with higher price( still cheaper than you can find in store) no need to wait weeks

  • And, buy extras

    • That's online. Finding them online is easy, I just thought at least one bricks and mortar store would stock them since it seems to be a common problem.

Also, if anyone buys from that link the images seem to be backwards, hopefully the product isn't as well

Almost impossible to find in most stores as a lot of them are considered non-compliant to Aus standards. This is due to the ability to be able to come in direct contact with the actual connector while a light is screwed in. Obviously it is almost impossible to do this unless you were really trying to electrocute yourself for some reason, but then again that's exactly why these standards are in place.

I'd say just buy them from online and don't think about it until they come. You've lived the last who knows how many years of your life without a smart bulb, you can surely last another week without them.

I was in exactly the same boat as you, bought smart lights and completely forgot the fittings were different so had to wait another week for my adapter to be shipped. The wait was definitely worth it now, can't imagine going back to 'dumb' lights now.

Considering they only cost about a dollar each, just buy a handful of them so you'll have them on hand when you inevitably purchase more.

  • Ikea

  • Electrics stalls at weekend trash and treasure markets often have them.

  • IKEA don’t have them. I went, looked and asked and was told by staff. Bunnings - no. I rang light shops that only sell lights - no.
    Online only.
