iPhone USED HELP Choosing?

Hi, I haven't been into Iphones since the 4s. My son on the other hand has to have them (different argument). Anyway, he needs a new phone.

So i am looking on Gumtree etc for a used one (around $500) and the variety varies so much. Everything from Iphone 6 to Iphone Max, Broken screens, you name it.

What should i be looking for? and what Price? ie: Value for money?

Thanks.

    Gumtree used - that will end poorly. Just buy new, eg IPhone 6s for $447 is a good phone with a local warranty.

    your son sounds like my wife…..

    • I know, my wife and i both got the LG v30+, $400 new with 2 year warranty.

      An equiv iphone is 3-4 years old.

      • Forget about an iPhone Xr, iPhone 11, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone Xmas, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Max.
        An iPhone 8 Plus would be a little better, but not by much, and you'd have to add an extra $150 to the budget.
        …So try to get an iPhone 7 Plus (128GB) for $400.

        That should provide you with just enough storage, just enough RAM, just enough performance, just enough battery life, just enough resolution, and just enough decent camera to keep you satisfied for a while. It's also water resistant like all other flagship devices. And you get the benefits of 3D-Screen and TouchID. Sure, it sucks that you don't have a Headphone Jack but its time to admit defeat and join the dongle-life (no charging while listening to music, or a dongle-splitter, or use a Bluetooth headset/earpod).

        Many people are "stuck" on their older iPhone 6S/7/8 Plus devices, they hate the Jony Ive (X/S/11) variants, and are waiting for either a 2020 or 2021 Tim Cook iPhone. You know when iPhones lose the Notch/Hole, get a better Aspect Ratio, perhaps get USB-C, maybe 120Hz display, get underscreen Face-Touch-ID, and also can connect to 5G Networks. That sounds like a device worth spending $1,000 on.

    If you buy second hand you're risking it being iCloud locked (stolen phone, or, seller selling it then claiming on insurance that it was stolen).

    • Easy enough to find out if it's iCloud locked.
      Stolen phone is bit harder, you do the blacklist check but if it's stolen real recently it might not be up there yet.
      The insurance claim scam is more likely to happen to brand new phones

    Don't bother with the iPhone 6 or older, Apple no longer supports them.
    I would say a decent price for a used (but good condition):
    SE: $200-250
    6s = $250-300
    6s Plus = $300-350
    7 = $350-400
    7 Plus = $400-450
    8 = $500-$550
    8 Plus $550-$600

    X, XR, XS (and of course newer models) will be more expensive and likely out of your budget

  • Why does he 'need' a new phone? Is his current one broken?

    • Yes. Yesterday.

      I said too him and his brother last weekend, who wants my phone (lg v30+) as im out of contract as of this week and was looking at the Pixel 3 xl deal with voda. No one was intetested.

      • No kidding? How much do you want for the V30? PM me if it's under $100 or so. :)

        • Used are going for $200

  • What area are you in?
    My wife and I just both upgraded to iPhone XS and have our previous ones available if interested

    • Newcastle

      • I’m in Revesby near menai. If you are interested, just drop me pm

  • Definitely look for a second hand 8, they will be supported by Apple for a few years yet, in fact Apple still sell them!
