Kogan TV with NVIDIA Shield or Kogan Android

TLDR - Should I buy XU9010 58 inch or JU8100 55 inch with Nvidia Shield?

I'm keen on taking up the $400 ($351) rebate at Kogan via Citybank and considering these two options:

Option: 1
https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-58-xu9010-4k-led-smartert…
Kogan 58" XU9010 4K LED SmarterTV™ ( Android TV™, Smart TV )
$639

Option 2
https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-55-4k-hdr-led-tv-series-8…
Kogan 55" 4K HDR LED TV (Series 8 JU8100)
with
Nvidia Shield
$668 - total

The price and size differences don't really matter to me. Also some of the shortcomings of the JU8100 are negated by the functionality of the shield, e.g. wifi, android, media playback etc.

The benefits of each that I can determine from the specs page are:

JU8100
Lower response time
HDMI-ARC
3.5mm Stereo Audio

XU9010
Has Bluetooth
Has Wifi (although the shield does too)
Higher typical brightness
Heaps more colours
Higher contrast ratio

There are other features that aren't listed on both such as CPU that I cant compare. And I am not familiar wit the screen manufacturers listed.

Question is - Will either one of them produce a noticeably better picture than the other and which one should I buy?

  • Inbuilt smart TVs usually have slower hardware and never receive updates while something like the Shield has good hardware and receives updates.

    • Good point. Even my Bravia ran like a dog before the most recent update.

  • Can't comment on those specific TV's, but my Sony Android TV can run real slow. I plan on buying a shield when the rumored new one comes out.

    • Have you updated to Android TV Pie? My Bravia performs much better after the update

  • I hate the Kogan smarter TV. Wish I had bought a dumb one and added Chromecast. Cannot cast unless TV is on. Cannot rename it from Globe. Poor implementation.

    • Are you talking about the TV with Android TV OS or the Kogan smart one? I'm not considering the Kogan smart one as I like the way android tv works. I agree that a Chromecast option is likely much better. Apart from the operating system how to you rate the picture quality?

  • Where's an option not to buy from Kogan?

    • Haha. I was waiting for this comment ;). After the discount surely a 55inch tv from Kogan is worth $250 For the kids? Even my 2018 Bravia ran android like a dog until the Android Pie update - now it's just ok.

  • Appreciate everyone's input.

I ended up getting the JU8100 55 with the Shield. I'm impressed with it.

For around 450 with delivery the picture quality is great. I have a Bravia 7500D and there is no way it's worth 4x this Kogan one.

It's placed opposite floor to ceiling windows and is still watchable during peak sunlight.

The remote is junk and the IR receiver had a very narrow field of view but - $419, and I use the Shield remote with CEC any way.

Not a detailed review but hopefully helpful to anyone considering. It would pair nicely with a Chromecast or Mi box to bring down cost but I wanted a Shield.

  • Additionally, most of the content I have supplied to the TV is min 1080 resolution. No doubt my Sony tv does a much better job of upscaling but its not something I've tested so far. 1080 content upscaled on my Sony is near indistinguishable from 4k to me.

The Kogan TV is for the kids and I'm not recommending it as a main TV in this case. Although I don't see why it wouldn't suit a lot of people as a main TV. It's exceptional value and I'm pleased with my first Kogan TV experience. Hopefully it lives a long ish life.
