Question - Climate Change & Public Transport

Would you use public transport more if you got some cash back for it?
Do you think that would help people use public transport more and as a result help reduce climate change or at least increase the awareness?

    • What state of the country are you in? It's missing from your profile. I'm curious where someone would love PT.

  • an article on traffic congestion in Sydney had an interesting quote, it was somehting along the lines of 'increasing roads increases congestion, and Sydney will not get any better until the obsession with cars is wound back'

    • +1

Well I think with the new price increases in fuel as a result of recent news might make people think different about using public transport vs the car. Might just get more expensive?

  • A better solution? Cut all Government's ability to borrow money. It will reduce the size of government, keeping conservatives and those who don't think climate change is a problem happy. It will cut government spending which will reduce the resulting carbon emissions of that spending (Trillions of dollars in some cases). It will reduce welfare dependency by forcing a lot of people to go off it cold-turkey and our taxes should drop significantly, giving us more time, freedom and prosperity!

Unfortunately though, nobody wants a small government solution to climate change. The Government talks up the problem and then makes out that they have the only solutions.

    • Where are the jobs coming from for these people?

      • From the new found ability to hire people with the tax savings.

Of course I don't know all the consequences of this action, but I like to have minimum necessary government and low national debt so it suits me.

        • minimum necessary government and low national debt

          why?

          • @abuch47: Because they get their money via coercion. Threatening your liberty and life if you don't give up a percentage of your income. In short: the way they operate is immoral so they have a duty to run as efficiently as possible. Military, Police and minimal regulation is all they need to do. Getting the population into debt just comes from over spending on unnecessary things.

  • Come on buddy, use facebook for your assignments :p

Our cities and suburbs aren't designed for public transport as we know it.

Unless your assignment is on public out reach, Propose a "new" solution, like automated electric car trains that cut down on emissions by reducing aerodynamic drag losses by keeping them closer than they could safely drive. Or take another principle of hypermiling, 'automate it' and pretend you created it/cured cancer!

  • I would use public transport if I can get to my office within reasonable time.
The public transport network in Brisbane is too CBD centric, not suitable for people who don't work in CBD.
It takes me 45-60 min to drive to my office in the morning but using public transport will take between 1.5 hours and 2 hours because I have to go through CBD first and then change bus/train.
