[Vic] Car Registration Lapsed in September 2018. I Now Want to Sell The Car

So I bought a car off someone May 2018 and the car had rego till September 2018.

I haven't renewed the rego since then is I didn't use the car. Now I'm selling it and want to put on 3 month rego.

So I just pay the money or do I have to do more work now since there's a gap in registration?

Thanks

Woah what? Do my OWN research!? No way!!!

    • So i need a roadworthy to re-register. Can i use the same road worthy to register AND sell it to someone else if its all within 30 days?

        Yes

        • Thank you.

        • Are you sure about this? They stamp something on the Roadworthy after they look at it and keep half the page I believe, how would you reuse it?

          • @andyhui01: I just called up vicroads. You can reuse. Just let them know when im using it the 1st time to registerm.

      • Sorry double post

        Won't let me delete?

        • I dont see double post

  • I believe you have to get a roadworthy certificate now you let it lapse. Not 100% though.

Before you get the car registered you'll have to get it passed as being roadworthy.

Everyone above is 100% correct, obviously.

But you don't necessarily need to register the car to sell it. It can be sold unregistered, as-is/where-is, and the buyer is responsible for transport, roadworthy, registration.

Depends how much it is worth, and how much extra you would get for it if registered.

Also need to bring the car for inspection by VicRoads before getting it registered. On top of the RWC.

    • Nope. Only if there's a change of ownership. If OP's last rego was in their name then an inspection is not required.

Incorrect. If the car has rego has expired (more than 3 months) you need new plates and book appointment with VicRoads (they do a check). See below OP's comment below.

It has happen to me twice when trying to register a car that was already in my name.

Ok called vicroads. Needs roadworthy. Then book appointment at vicroads ($19). Then need new plates ($38). No stamp duty required.

    • Do you think the vehicle will pass roadworthy OK?

      • Yea ill pay to fix whatever is needed

Well done, OP! See, you didn't need us after all :)

So the car needs a roadworthy before it can be registered?

      • Yes cos when i didnt renew my rego the rego is deemed cancelled. Thats why i may need new plates cos they can give my plate number to others.

      • Thanks guys. Nah not no manners. Appreciate the responses. Hope my update helps others

    • ummm, new plates, if it's registered in SA you won't need roadworthy :)

Precendently to attaining authorisation warranting registration of ones automobile enabling use of our road and traffic authority of Victoria's roads and freeways, one must substantiate and affirm the said automobile's steadfastness to engage in such travel upon such roads in the form of a Certificate of Roadworthiness issued by a licensed vehicle tester.

  • What car is it? Is it worth selling without roadworthy and rego?

  • If no rego only dealers will buy it and it wont be worth it. Its an older car.

    • I have a feeling the next thread will be "Mechanic ripping me off on a RWC". Why are you so confident it will pass if it is an older car?

      • Cos selling it without rwc is so hard. And dealers will rip you off.

  • Honestly, just ring VicRoads, we don't pay taxes for nothing!
