Bringing Frozen Crab from Japan

Hi, does anyone have experience of bring frozen cooked crab from Japan into Australia???
I search the customs site and it can be imported but require a check from the bio-security officer.
Any tips about this? Is it a easy check or long wait also do you hand carry or checked luggage.

Thanks in advance!!!!!

I assume you bring like 1kg, not 200kg, bring it, let them know, 90% of the chance they will let you in as its from Japan not China.
Make sure they are well sealed.

      So there's potential for radiation………

for sure, i drink asahi and my urine glows in the dark, great if you need to mark the exit out of a dark cave

Tell the bio-security officer that the crab is frozen and sealed. If he knows what he is doing he should just let it go.

The cold shouldn't bother him anyway…..

I would think so as the crab is dead and would not feel any weather effects.

          woosh

@Archi: Actually you are the one who is getting the whoosh as I deliberately set up the original comment for someone to respond. It's pretty obvious with the choice of word emphasis and I am disappointed that you did not see it.

I then take it a step further by pretending to ignore the reference I helped set up by taking the reply out of context. It is always funny when the person making the jokes appears to not realize he is making them.

I am playing 3D chess in your 2D world, and you are oblivious to it.

For real though, surely someone read through the thread and saw what I was doing. It's pretty rudimentary.

              @hey aj: Let it go.

            • +3

@hey aj: ahhh looks like the jokes is on me.

as below .. double woosh to me. hahaha.

but I don't need to write an essay to explain

@Archi: Actually Archi the double whoosh from Darth is directed at me as his attempt to further pile on from another thread where he did not get a joke I made from one of his own comments.

@hey aj: Mate I love your work, but you know how explaining a joke kills it….

              • @HighAndDry: Yeah I know, I broke my cover and lost the crowd. My bad.

@hey aj: Can't please everyone all the time. Effort's appreciated haha.

            @Archi: double woosh

    • How does it keep frozen for hours?

      • Blend it and put it in a thermos flask? ;)

Haven't brought crab back from Japan but I have brought frozen & preserved seafood back from Korea a few times.

As long as it's cooked or preserved and in a sealed package then it should be fine.

I checked it in in a plastic wrapped & taped insulated box inside a cardboard box with some packing material just to protect it from knocks & bumps.

I declared it on the arrival card, the customs officers asked a couple of questions and gave it a pretty cursory inspection but it was no harder or more invasive than any other time I've declared something. Be aware that it could depend on who you get checking your bags and what kind of mood they're in, but my experience has generally been pretty easy.

I would be more worried about the product thawing and spoiling. It's going to be outside a freezer for at least 16 hours, possibly more. Cargo holds are pressurized so you can't rely on natural cooling there.

I brought cheese home with me from Austria. Kept it in the fridge as long as possible and wrapped it in insulating foil. Got home to Australia without problems. The Customs officer just wanted to know whether it was from a foot and mouth disease free country.

    Here is a handy guide:

Looks like there's a special allowance for Japan. Contact your airline. Maybe they'll let you use dry ice? You cannot use ice or ice bricks under any circumstances, but gels are fine.

  • Not sure about legality (raw would be a no I believe) but is it still going to be frozen by the time you arrive? About a 9 hour flight and I guess add an hour each end so minimum of 11 hours if there are no delays.

    • An hour on each end? It takes almost 50 minutes just to get to Narita airport from Tokyo. Add in the time required for check in (bare minimum 2 hours), plus time since picking up the crab in a market or checking out from a hotel, I'd add a lot more time.

Maybe the crab will be purchased at the airport, although that's quite unlikely.

      • bring a foam box and some cooking gel packs. make sure it is frozen through out when you pack. you should be fine.

Better off stashing packets of ciggies here there and everywhere

    • Here there and everywhere, even the prison purse?

      • Don't worry I have a jewish lawyer on retainer haha

  • No harm in bringing in and declared it. Have seen/heard people managed to bring in cooked hairy crabs with no issues so long they declared it.

  • Meanwhile I was instructed to throw out commercially purchased and sealed freeze dried hiking meals because they contain meat. Go figure

    • Its all depend on country of origin/Customer office in charge/Time of the day.

If you see a Border Security film crew around it could be your 15 seconds of fame moment. Deny you have food in the luggage. Customs officer opens luggage…. 'What's this then! It's full of food!' You suddenly lose the ability to speak English as you stare at the Customs declaration form.

Border Security voice over: "Quarantine officials are about to get… crabby with this traveler"

Let's see if this traveler can claw their way out of this situation before it boils over.

  • Lobster versus crab I wonder which is the champion.

Nice username OP, one of Tekken’s forgotten characters.

    • My friend married a Japanese woman and her father's name is Yoshimitsu. He said he's not a space ninja though

      • As far as I know from my limited knowledge of Tekken from playing it at the arcade as a kid.
Yoshimitsu was a ninja who lost his family and in order to exact revenge, made an agreement with a dark spirit who gave him his supernatural abilities & demon like appearance.

  • Why?

  • The department has a website listing entry conditions for most products (BICON): https://bicon.agriculture.gov.au/BiconWeb4.0/ImportCondition…

Specifically for crabs from Japan see here for the specific case: https://bicon.agriculture.gov.au/BiconWeb4.0/ImportCondition…

  • Think I record from an old episode of Border Security that you are allowed a small amount (something like up to a few/ a couple of kg) of seafood if they are prepared and packaged properly.

  • I once brought live crabs back with me without any issue, except it was not the kind of crabs you would eat :-(
