Anyone interested might like to know this system is not PoE
    Product page: https://uniden.com.au/product/gxvr55840/

Yeah, it isn't even RJ-45! Analog BNC & coax all the way… but it does look as though the NVR can actually handle IP Cameras within the same subnet so that's a semi-plus. Equivalent 4x $40 cameras plus a $150 NVR = approx. half the asking price of this sorry.

  • Can anyone recommend a unit 4 or 8 cameras?
I was looking at the previous swann that jbhifi also had a discount and now this one.

I suppose it comes down to your budget and expectations. I could recommend you a pro-sumer system similar to mine (5x 4K POE HIKVISIONs plus a 32TB Synology NAS plus licenses) as it's excellent but you re looking at about $2500 total… and it's nowhere near high end and only just allows me to read license plates on passing cars… just. I could also recommend an ALDI kit for a few hundred bucks too but it would only provide a fraction of the resolution and low-light capabilities. Sorry to put a spanner in the works but there's quite a lot you need to consider when thinking about camera security but I suppose it really all comes down to budget because even a $200 system is better than nothing!

      • I'm thinking I'll ether go the hikvision route with Synology or unifi.

Having trouble picking hikvision cameras though, any suggestions?

        • +1

Yeah, it's a really nice way of doing it because you get decent camera and recording features & quality plus all the benefits of a kick-ass NAS for storage and streaming etc. HIKVISION suggestions? Yes, be sure not to do what I did the first time and go the cheap route. Be sure to ONLY buy local stock with AU firmware. Dont even be tempted by OS stuck with English firmware… just pay for the local & AU stuff as you wont have any issues moving forward. I had to replace all my HIKVISION cheapie last year because I couldn't update them and they were continually being hacked… but all that was fixed with the better local AU models. Still only about $180-$200 per camera when on an eBay 20% off sale so not too bad for very decent 4K cams.

      • thanks for the reply.
What do you think about this unit my budget was around $1500

Yep, looks good for an all-in-one pack. My only concern is the fact that the HDD is only 2TB. You need to keep in mind that recording a single channel of 4K @ 25fps totals just under 200Gb per 24 hours therefore the included 2TB HDD will only allow approx 3 days of recorded history if all cameras are running flat out. You can obviously alter the resolution and frame rate to greatly improve storage efficiency but of course that comes at a cost of clarity and therefore the possibility of missing something critical during an event (clear face shot, number plate on a moving car at night etc.). Again, it all comes down to what your personal expectations are and what you expect the system to capture and how long you wish to keep it but all I can recommend is that you look into how easy/difficult it is to upgrade the internal HDD or even just add storage to the system when required. I assume the internal drive is just a regular SATA HDD and you'd hopefully be able to just pop any old drive in there (an 8, 10 or 12TB for example) but also note that some firmware can't handle anything more than 4TB so it's worth checking & confirming first.

Have a look on Amazon au for Reolink. I've got 5MPixel cameras x 6 (2 bullet, 4 dome), 2TB hard drive, 8 port POE (yes, it's basically plug and play).

I then used no-ip to set up dns which allows me to see any of the cameras on the phone anywhere in the world. Amazing piece of kit for the price and great night vision.

Have a look on YouTube for reviews

  • Hmm. No PoE is a pain.

What are people's thoughts on this one? https://www.amazon.com.au/Reolink-Security-Outdoor-Recording… also for $599. Seems like a better deal?

    or from eBay $539 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Reolink-8CH-5MP-PoE-Surveillance…
    or 4MP version $472 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Reolink-4MP-HD-PoE-Security-Came…

Yep, for the same money it's a far nicer kit. POE via RJ-45, slightly higher res, nicer standard dome cameras and what looks to be a nicer designed & more compact NVR. Obviously I haven't used either and the OS alone could be a deal-breaker but the Reolink does look a better all-over IMO.
