I'm looking to install a couple of units before summer and had a question, can someone please tell me the pros/cons (if any) of a cool-only AC unit?
Our house has central heating so I feel a split system is unnecessary as the heating element would never get used.
Heating could be cheaper than Gas. It leaves your option there for not much extra $.
Pros - Simpler, less stuff to go wrong. Cheaper
Cons - No backup if your gas goes out. Resale value
I'm guessing your looking at window boxes, which come with their own set of cons. Namely the noise and the lower efficiency. Fine if you only use it on the really hot days, but if your using it all the time it doesn't take long for usage costs to exceed the initial costs. Especially with our electricity prices
Thanks for the reply.
I'm actually looking at wall-mounted units.
Theres no many pro's going to cooling only beyond saving $50-100 tbh, better have it and not use it then need it and not have it. Better yet you don't really have to include Heating into your calculations when choosing splits because you get more area/kw than Cooling. Dw about resale value because nobody really purchases old units. Once you factor in removal and regas it's hardly worth the drama.
@ExtraSalt: Fair enough, I am also considering evaporative cooling at this stage, so if that doesn't work out then I will definitely look at both heating/cooling and cooling-only AC units.
@ExtraSalt: Just curious about no one going for second hand units? The 3.5kw units are all sold out here, but I came across a couple of current 2.5/ 3.2kw Panasonic splits (r410a version) going for $150 each second hand (gas in compressor).
Are there reasons to avoid used units other than usage? I Could save around $1000 going for these units (still have warranty). Are there any extra costs that may normally be included in a new unit (ie gas?)
But I wouldn't pay say $400+ for a second-hand units.
lol how did you come the the Boxed AC conclusion? they never mentioned which type and based on the listing, ypu'd assume Split System
For splits, the cool only vs reverse is pretty much a non argument because of the small saving and the high installation cost. It represents like a 6-9% saving on initial costs. Not really enough to bother with.
But with window boxes its actually a viable argument. If you were going to be in a house for only a few years, it might make sense to buy window boxes, use them, and then sell them off when you leave.
The 3.5kw Panasonic is only 799 after discount.. grabbed one thanks
Thanks OP - went into Chadstone and picked up one of the 3.5Kw Panasonic's today!
While there I saw they had a sticky note for (I think) it was a cooler only version only (ie. no heater) of the Mitsubishi Heavy 3.3kW incase anyone is interested.
Thanks OP. I also grabbed two of the Panasonic 3.5kW units for my two common areas. Great unit, great price! Cheers
Anyone know the cost of installation?
back to back normally 500-600
gonna say around the ballpark of
~$600 <5kw
~$750 <8kw
~$900 8kW+
Why does it cost more for the more powerful units?
Dedicated electrical circuit required.
3 star rating seems very LOW??? maybe not worth it.
compared to ?
Something like this 5 star rating wifi ect https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/rinnai-c35kw-h35kw-reverse-cy…
Bunnings price match potential here?
*Edit . Just looked at the Mitsubishi units on Bunnings site. They are R32 gas units. I thought everything is R410A now? With R32 not as compressible, therefore less efficient?
Can't see the gas used on Goodguys site. Looking at the Rinnai, as it is in stock at my local.
Well I'll answer my own question. Apparently R32 is newer than R410A. R22 being the old gas.
The general consensus on OB is to stay away from secondary brands when it comes to hard install items such as air conditioners. Favourite brands on here are MIH, Panasonic and Fujitsu. You really cant go wrong with the clearance price and then a further 20% off the Panasonic CS/CU range. A lot of us have jumped on this today.
Hope this helps
Cheers, but no Panasonic / MHI stock anywhere near me :(
is it better to oversize the airconditioner?
Looking for a room 3.2 x 3 and thinking about the 3.5 kW rather than the 2.5 kW as it is a north facing room.
2.5kW would be more then enough mate. Save the coin. Get this - https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/panasonic-c25kw-h32kw-reverse…
At $639 you cant go wrong.
Coupon code no longer working for me.
It looks like the 20% is back on, and no coupon or code is needed https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/cooling-sale
I wonder if you could ask a mod to republish this deal, then you could just change the link, and remove the code.
