So today I went to JB Hifi to see if I could port my number to Telstra after a horrific Optus experience where (A) their recharge interface completely f*&ked up and (B) their best technology is H+ and not even Volte.
So they changed the game so that if you go for Plan $45 for 12 mths you will now get $100 Gift Card (Drop from $200). Effective cost per 12 mths would be $440.
If you instead go for Plan $65 for 12 mths you will now get $400 Gift Card (Up from $300). Effective cost per 12 mths would be $380.
At a glance this sounds fantastic until you realized had you taken up the Plan $45 for 12 mths with $200 gift card (which was still available last week or two), the plan would have effectively costed you $340.
So their worst case scenario would be $40 better off for JB Hifi/Telstra (if everybody got sucked in and go for Plan $65) compared to their position before.
I regretted not moving faster but hopefully Black Friday will knock the sense out of them and bring back $200.
Also, incidentally, there is a memo that I managed to read but cannot upload (but I have the screenshot) that said something like this for ETC, given there seems to be a lot of people trying to ace the game by getting into JB and then moves to Telstra for their Peace of Mind thingy and reduced monthly cost.
