Air Purifier Suitable for Asbestos Particles?

Hi everyone

I have learnt that there are some asbestos materials around the house. We plan to remove some of the materials from the house (by hiring a certified removalist) and leave others undisturbed.

My wife and I are very concerned about this as we have little children in our family. And I was wondering if having air purifiers in the house will help remove any asbestos particles in the air. If so, would anyone be able to recommend air purifiers that will do the job? I know that Xiaomi air purifiers have been popular, but not sure if this will be suitable for filtering asbestos particles in the air.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Edit: thanks everyone for your responses. I didn't make it very clear in my original post but we will hire a certified company to do any removal of asbestoes. My query was related to the post-removal management.

  • I'm no expert on this but Google says as long as it's a HEPA filter, it should be able to filter for asbestos - but how effective it is for that is anyone's guess.

Personally I've had good experience using Philips Air purifiers. Recently we bought the Dyson Pure but it doesn't feel as 'filtered' as a dedicated air purifier with the three or four different filters.

Agree with jace - HEPA filters will filter out asbestos particles, BUT licenced professionals also use some kind of mist machine while removing the asbestos to minimise the amount of particles left to float in the air in the first place, and I don't doubt other ways of minimising asbestos exposure and distribution too.

No, air purifier is a misnomer.

Get it professionally removed and cleaned. Then clean every surface yourself with vacuum cleaner (with HEPA filter) then soap and water.

Umm dude, don't mess with asbestos, call the pros. You might save a few dollars doing it yourself but you don't have to hand in your Ozbargain membership card if paying extra means you don't suffer and die from a horrible disease later down the track Lost a mate to asbestos a few years back, wouldn't wish it on anyone.

There is almost no safe way to DIY asbestos removal, and in some cases, its illegal.
An air purifier will do almost nothing in making safe asbestos particles if you disturb them by moving it incorrectly.

Block-quote A non-licensed person undertaking non-friable asbestos removal work must be considered to be a competent person. This means that the person must have completed training, have industry experience and have the right equipment for the task.

if you are asking how to purify the air, you are by definition, not a competent person for this job.

  • We demand more asbestos! More asbestos!

  • You are advised to suit up like a spaceman just to empty a vacuum cleaner that's got any asbestos in it.

Just do it asbestos you can.

  • It's all BS op, 40 years to wait to die from 1 particle up your nose lol. The guys dying from it are the ones that worked in the mines or spent day after day cutting it with saws to build houses. Just leave it unless you are renovating, every old house will have some fibro somewhere.

    • I'm waiting for it to get me. I worked with asbestos daily from 1979-1987. It's a crap shoot.

  • They used to have asbestos shovelling competitions:

  • OP. What are your asbestos management plans after the professionals have done their bit?.

Ideally you need to bond it or encapsulate it so that air filtering isn't needed.
