The Sodastream website is a god-awful mess and gives no argument why their $249 model is a better choice than their $79 model.
So I'd like to crowd source an answer before I buy my first carbonating product – which is the best?

Mate I spent 2 hours last night trying to figure it out and I got nowhere.
I'm thinking I'll just follow you and get the cheapest. At the end of the day, they'll all make sparkling water.
I've got an old screw in one - my son loves helping me press the button and making it fart.
The $79 option.
Wouldn't the $20 one be better again?
Heh, missed it by a day
My wife wants a sodastream and I also have nfi which one to get.
Oh, wait on, that is a different question than OP's.
You are buying something for your wife (which just happens to be a sodastream). You need to consider colours, benchspace footprint, etc.
I'd go mid-range price-wise and hope for the best.
Just make sure it is in her favourite colour and you should be good to go
I had an "original" Soda Stream that required screwing-in the bottle. I moved to a Source Element (what an awful name!) and it has a 'grabber' so the bottle just clicks in. It has a very large area to push-down, so it's easier than pushing a button. There's also a little gimic that shows the "strength" of the bubbles, which is basically how long you held it down.
I think that any of the models will do the same job, so no need to go for the more expensive models. Definitely get some extra bottles and some spare cylinders. We have about 4 spare cylinders, so we don't have to go to the shop very often. Shell Petrol stations have the swap cylinders and they will qualify you for 10c/L petrol discount.
Sounds like we have similar. Works pretty good but make sure the bottles are secure. First time I used it the bottle wasn’t secured and water went everywhere. We put bottles in the fridge and aerate them just before use.
I had the same dilemma when I was shopping for one.
I found a solution that worked well for me. I looked on Facebook marketplace and found heaps of people selling them. I just chose one that was pretty close by, that was a good price and came with two empty bottles. The woman had only had it a few weeks and decided it was cheaper to just buy bottled soda water.
We ended up with one that is powered and has different buttons for different strength of fizz. I must say, I only used it moments ago and given we don't keep it plugged in all the time, I did ponder how much I would like one that was unpowered.
I've managed to find a mob close to home who do $10 bottle refills and like Fermax, we have got 4 bottles so we don't have to refill very often.
Solid reply, thanks mate. Had a crack at FB Marketplace but there's actually not many in Melbourne. Going to have to be patient!
Absolutely right!
I don't really know what's "best" per se, but I recently bought the Spirit when it was on sale at Big W and it's totally fine and easy to use (no screwing the top in, no farting noises).
I guess you might choose one that uses mains power if you lack the physical strength to press down the button? But yes, just get the Spirit. On sale.
