NBN Jumpers, Share Your Experience

So far I've been with 3 NBN providers, here's my experience being on 50/20 NBN.

  1. Belong ($65/Month)
Horrible, period. Counted days till the contract ended, couldn't take it no more. Ended the contract and happily paid the penalty.

  2. Tangerine( $64.90 6 months promo)
Good at the beginning, then I realised they throttled streaming like YouTube, Netflix etc. This was a big no no. Evening speed tests went up to 47/18 surprisingly but being on a 50 plan, I was struggling to watch 1080p YouTube videos via LAN.

  3. Superloop ( $74.95/month Promo)
Currently on Superloop. Experience has been quite good so far, only thing is that they don't provide a static ip (+$5 addon).
Evening speeds are 46/18 on average, no issues with streaming or peer-to-peer ;).
Member dashboard shows a nice usage stats. Bit expensive compared to the other 2, but totally worth it so far.

Folks here have been praising AussieB, but has anyone here been with both and happy to share their experience? Any other NBN providers that could compete?

Edit: FYI, I'm on HFC.

  • I moved into my house two months back which has FTTP and chose to go with Superloop after some research.
Great so far, nothing to complain about. The service was provisioned really quick and was active within hours of applying online. Consistently getting 93/34 in the evening and haven't experienced any disruptions.
My parent's house also transitioned to NBN recently (HFC), also moved them over to Superloop. No issues there either.

    • Welcome to the club.

  • Had nbn for 2 weeks, went with aussiebroadband, besides a network outage that they provided 24 hours notice for there was another outage for about an hour that was not planned or notified ahead of time.
So overall not too bad, although before that i had adsl2+ that i could have a stable connection for 18 months straight with 0 downtime.

Please be aware of upcoming maintenance on the Aussie Broadband network. Your services may experience an outage during the following window:
START DATE: Sunday 1st September 2019 00:00 Hrs AEST
END DATE: Sunday 1st September 2019 06:00 Hrs AEST
    BREAK/DURATION: 5 hours

Seems to be a monthly thing.

It's probably a good sign that they're doing small maintenance every month. It means they're upgrading their back end constantly, rather than just flooding existing equipment

Devoted was my first NBN provider and I picked them because they were cheap. I had terrible speeds with them initially

That was until they were acquired by NuSkope, and once my contract ended Nuskope sent a letter stating that my grandfathered $55/mth plan was going to be replaced with a much pricier $79.95 plan. You'll see that email quoted in SourNipple's post.

Not wishing to pay that much, I jumped ship to another cheap looking provider, Telecube. They provided 100mbit NBN plans for a measly $75 dollars a month, something that you nowadays have to pay around $100+.

But it looks like I didn't learn my lesson… when it comes to NBN, you get what you pay for, so I fell into the trap of going with a tight-ass option.

On top of poor peak time performance and very frequent dropouts the company actually went under with $1.68 million of debt owing to its creditors and my services were cut off unexpectedly in the middle of my billing month (wasn't able to get a refund for that either) so I've decided enough was enough and I would stop trying to save a mere $10 month going with these B-grade companies.

I signed up to Aussie Broadband and went for their mid-range offering of 50mbps ($79) and well, never looked back since.

(Actually I lied. I'm now with Superloop because their plans are $74.95 which is slightly cheaper still than Aussie Broadband, and if I had to compare the two, SL and ABB are pretty similar in terms of download speeds).

    • Thanks for the detailed input. I'm currently with SL and they're pretty decent, think being a commercial provider they have a good network infrastructure.

But after reading about what Axelstrife stated, I'm starting to consider Kogan for a $1 extra given the fact that it's 100/40.

      Any objections anyone?

  • I've found belong to be excellent

Been with Internode for 3 trouble free years, no complaints at all.

  • Been with TPG on the cheapest plan for 3 years and no problems apart from a few drop outs.

My main problem now is that the battery is dying and it constantly beeps, you can silence the beep for 24 hours but it's getting annoying doing that. The ozbagainer in me doesn't want to buy a new battery as it's not needed.

    • +1

You dont need the battery. Just yank it out it serves no purpose unless you have an old school wired handset plugged directly into the ntu. I've not had a battery in mine for 2 years and have also pulled them out for numerous customers.

      • Does that stop the beeping? I thought it would still beep if there was no battery in there?

        • Think there is a silent mode on there.

    • I just press the alarm silence button for about 30 seconds until it beeps again. Then the alarm shuts up for a year.

I am with aussie broadband 50/20. Speeds are ok but sometimes slow to get netflix 1080p in the evenings. Wanting to switch as we hardly use it and its so expensive after the 6 months honeymoon. Customer service we received was good (sign up) to poor (email).

Was with mungi before that. They were good until they went under and charged for the month. Lucky i got the successful credit card chargeback.

      • I just press the alarm silence button for about 30 seconds until it beeps again. Then the alarm shuts up for a year.

I'll give that a try tonight. Thanks!

      • Speeds are ok but sometimes slow to get netflix 1080p in the evenings

You shouldn't get slow speeds at peak times with ABB. Have you checked your router/local network/WiFi?

        • Probably worded incorrectly. Just mean it plays at 480p or so until it reaches 1080p. Speed checks seem fine 45-47 most of the time when i check. Probably a chromecast issue. Still only happens at peak times in the evenings (when we watch netflix).

  • Have been with Exetel for about 8 months, FTTB on NBN 50 plan. Very stable with good speed.

What was so bad about belong?
I hate their mobile, but their nbn is cheap, so considering. Either them or Kogan since I’ve heard good things about kogan.

You raise the thoughts I had, while happy with my provider, (not Belong) my thoughts on reading the post is why Belong was so terrible? My Brother uses them (his third provider) and is quite happy but there in lies the probable answer.

The op wants our thoughts but gives nothing.

Also how long have they been with their current provider, if it’s only a short time then any assessment is also limited.

Finally based on my past and neighbours/family past experiences, the NBN is most troublesome in the beginning, so the first and sometimes second provider get most of the flack during the install period.

Picking a low support/price provider in the beginning isn’t that wise, get everything settled using a quality supplier, then when it’s bedded down go for savings which generally come out of support, which you need less of when it beds in.

    • I have had Belong for 4 years. No probs. I have NBN FTTP. No prime time outages ever that I have noticed.

    • Yeah, curious on this too. Most of the complaints I read are to do with customer support. But as a Belong mobile customer every time I've contacted them, I get relatively fast, clear responses. My queries haven't been all that complicated though.

Been with tpg since I got nbn which was over 3 years ago. Been decent other than periods of slowness which i put down to lack of bandwidth allocation in my area at times. Have had tangerine at a holiday house which were fine but was only a 12/1 connection which they grandfathered. One good thing with them was the review credits. Probably saved a good $100+ off my sub over the 6 months. Plus its was $10 off over that period. Then they jacked up prices so moved to belong for $55. Even though they advertise it's a slower speed instill find I get near 50/20 in tests at all times. Not there all the time but seems fine when I use it.

    • Yep, tangerine is decent for the average user, but won't recommend for power users as they'll definitely notice the throttling.

I game, Download from Torrents and Usenet

Iprimus - 12/1 years ago as a first provider, Ping jumped to 400+ during peak hours and they refused to do a single thing about it so i left and will NEVER go back.

TPG - 12/1 and 25/15 they where great i had no issues at all i only left cause of Myrepublic's 100/40 and low prices

Myrepublic - 100/40 I personally had a semi great experience over a year and a half with them there was a couple weeks where they all of a sudden throttled torrents BADLY but that went away still no idea what it was about, i left cause they raised price by i think it was $20 a month and i lost my static IP which with Myrepublic is BAD as they use CGnat.when i was with them they only had a sydney server so others outside of sydney have high ping in games, idk if this is still the case.

Mungi (no longer exist's) - 100/40 Cheap and awesome connection, left when they cut connection as they shutdown.

Aussie Broadband - 100/40 Awesome connection easily the best ive been with, left due to the 6 months at $20 off offer ending and could save $23 a month

    CURRENT ISP
Kogan NBN - 100/40 Speeds have been really good, I'm still unsure if i'll leave after 9 months as price will go back to $85.90 will depends on other isp's offerings and prices at the time but i would recommend this provider

    • Thanks for your input.

      With Kogan:
How's your ping to steam SG servers? I'm guessing they don't throttle torrents and streaming services?

  • Initially was on Telecube which was quite reasonable until the it's shut down.
Transitioned to Tangerine during that 6 months promotion post Telecube and experienced very similar results as yourself, in terms of my experience initially, it was quite good but it just got worst and worst, and I don't think I'm a heavy user.
Switched to ABB because of the 20/month discount which is now unfortunately coming to an end. No real complaints about ABB which I guess is it's perks no real issues. It is getting more expensive now and looking to switch!

  • Using Exetel. The bad thing is everyone on Exetel is complaining on the downed network
Can put up with it because I only paid $59.99 for NBN 50 for unlimited usage

    • I'd rather pay $75 for a proper stable connection than a downed network. Simply not worth it to save that $15.

  • Received a letter saying my home's NBN ready last night. I am currently with TPG. Gave them a call they said no promo but would waive the contract fee since I've been with them for quite a long time.

They also forced me to buy their modem for $10 (delivery, device cost free). My current one was bought from Officeworks two years ago for about $200 (Back then the sales guy told me it's definitely NBN ready) It has very good signal penetration. TPG guy was saying their only modem is compatible with NBN. Not sure how a free device is better than a $200 one? Anyone having experience with TPGcan shade some light pls? Thanks.

    • What's your $200 modem/router model?

  • Just because you had a bad experience with Belong doesn't mean you bag them out without even an explanation. All the cheap providers are frustrating to deal with but you just need to know your rights. The speed and drop outs is what is important. Belong have been fantastic for me on that front on NBN FTTN.
