BYO Mobile Phone Plans/Options for Country NSW

Hi OZB community,

My current Telstra mobile plan is about to expire where I am on a $54.00 plan plus $30.00 p/m for the phone.

I live in country NSW so I am not sure if some of these offers from the likes of Boost would be suitable for me in terms of getting phone service etc.

Telstra have a $50.00 plan (month-by-month) which has unlimited text/call and 15GB data but surely there is better value out there?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (Also, I want to keep my current number if possible)

Thanks!

Benny

I live in country NSW so I am not sure if some of these offers from the likes of Boost would be suitable for me in terms of getting phone service etc.

Boost uses full Telstra so it would be exactly the same as your current plan's coverage.

How much data do you need a month?

    • Yeah I wasn't sure how that worked.

I am currently on 7GB a month and I have never gone over.

You could probably get away with the Boost deal then.
It's 80gb over 12 months, so 6.7gb a month. Worst case you top up a month early if you run out of data, but you are saving a boatload of money.

    • Boost uses full Telstra

AFAIK It doesn't support 4GX - not sure if there are any noticeable differences between the two though.

      • Yes it does. 4GX is just marketing speak for Telstra's 700MHz 4G service, which Boost supports.

There is literally no difference between a Boost service and a Telstra pre-paid service except for the ability to buy global roaming data on Telstra prepaid…

        • Boost uses all Telstra towers but I don't think this implies an identical service. It's possible that Boost doesn't have access to carrier aggregation at all towers leading to lower maximum speeds than Telstra. You'll find plenty of comments from people using both Boost and Telstra SIMs in the same phone and getting different speeds, for what that is worth.

          • @dazweeja: It does imply an identical service - I know because I use it and get the same speeds I get in inner Melbourne as I used to get on Telstra postpaid, the same coverage when I drive in the backblocks of rural Victoria and the same access to offers on hub.telstra.com.au including sports live passes.

Unless you actually have a Boost service, please don't speculate…

Simple buy a cheap Boost sim and test it for yourself, also try Belong, another Telstra service. Dont port your number just use the default number. (You buy another sim when you want to port)

I know you may want someone here to tell you, but in reality, unless you know someone locally that has these plans thats the best way, and a month plan is relatively cheap. Dont go for the high data plan just the smallest so you can do comparisons with what you have now at a small cost.

Then if its ok go with the plan suggested above by theguyrules

  • Boost is full Telstra, with VoLTE and VoWifi to boot.

The $150/80GB/12 month deal (https://boost.com.au/shop/150-prepaid/) will be fine but note if coming from Telstra you need a special blank SIM. See https://boost.com.au/get-help/help-topics/#HOW_DO_I_BRING_MY…

  • Thanks for the all suggestions, it sounds like I can save alot of money doing it this way.

Just curious about the JB Hi-Fi BYO deals, would that be good value and can I keep my current number?

    • Thanks! I will have a look at this too

    • Still $10 more than Boost for the same amount of data…

      (It's $100 for 60GB valid for 6 months on Boost…)

      • The Telstra plan would be $600.00 for 12 months so either way I am going to be way better off :)

Does anyone have any feedback about the JB Hi-Fi deals as I shop there a fair bit so a $300.00 on a higher cost plan could still put me in front maybe?

Don't go on a plan, prepaid is much cheaper. Go for Boost $20pm (or the $150/80GB/12 month deal mentioned already) or Telstra prepaid $30pm.
All the other Telstra resellers (Aldi, Woolies, Belong etc) other than Boost only get access to a cut-down version of the telstra network, which is no big deal in the city but is in country areas.

    • is prepaid better than a kogan plan for example?
