Bad Wear and Tear on Secret Lab Chair Due to Medical Condition

Hey guys, have a question if you're able to help me out.
My housemate has a medical condition called hyperhidrosis that causes him to sweat uncontrollably even in cold weather.

Hes healthy weight wise, it's just some kind of disorder.

He bought a secret lab chair a few years ago, after owning several Officeworks chairs that lasted him a few years each with no real issue aside from loose lean and inability to adjust back.

His new chairs after about 2 or so years, the PU leather has started to come apart and badly flake in some areas.

The arm rests material has also come apart.

He's messaged secret lab and they are telling to just buy a new chair and offering a $70 discount (off a $600 chair)

He can't afford it, not does he want this to happen again if he did.

Any idea what his options are?

Secret lab says his chair isn't under warranty any more but the new chairs have 5 year warranty which is a kick in the gut.

ACCC?
Thanks guys.

those gaming chairs are all garbage, yes accc

    • ACCC does nothing. Submitted a report on my X3 chair being a danger hazard and didn't hear anything back.

      • Wait, why's the X3 a danger hazard?!

    • None are good? What chair do you recommend?

Does the warranty cover soaking the seat in mild salt water?

Got 2 years usage out of a chair when they have a known medical condition which would affect the life of said chair.

Harsh reality here, but it sounds like there's not much your housemate can do except buy a new chair.
If they're going to go through chairs because of a medical condition, I'd be buying nothing but cheap chairs as they're going to have to be replaced, sooner rather than later, anyways.

I've learnt many years go never to buy PU anything. Mesh is the way to go when it comes to office chairs.

  • How does he manage his condition usually? eg: does he have a towel or something similar when he uses shared furniture like the couch?

  • Get a second hand office chair, Herman miller or some such. Cost probably 120-500. Probably also need to watch out for rusting due to his sweat leaking into chair parts.

  • Tell your friend to buy this (optional arm rests) or this

Amazing chairs for the price, far better than any "gaming" chair and will last a long time.

  • If he thinks the rest of the chair will last and he likes it, get some seat covers made that can be removed and washed. Do them in a black, cotton based fabric with some texture.

  • You'd think with his condition he'd be using replaceable chair covers by default. That's what I'd recommend. Have a few sets, cycle/wash them as needed.

  • PU leather patch repair on aliexpress.
Just fix your problem instead of replacing it.

  • I think $600 chair should last more than 2 years.
I think you may have reasonable grounds according to Australian Consumer Law for repair/replacement or refund.

I think the main issue is whether you think the hyperhidrosis is severe enough to explain the damage. I would be surprised but I don't know how much your housemate sweats lol.

  • Bad Wear and Tear (…) Medical Condition

After reading the title, was expecting one of those labour stories, of the 3rd degree variety.😬

Glad the wear and tear were only on the chair. Hope you were able to resolve the issue satisfactorily :)
