Hello Ozbargainers,
I would like to visit my family in the UK over Christmas. The earliest I can depart is the 14th of December and I need to return no later than the 3rd of January. I realise booking this late the flights are expensive but I was wondering if anyone has any good websites I can try please? So far Google is coming up with flights that are upwards of $2,800. Some require 3 stops and take 46 hours to reach the destination.
I tried Skyscanner. Haven't heard of Momondo so will give that one a go. Thanks
The problem is likely the first flight out of Darwin - you need to get to a major airport as cheaply as possible first then look for cheap flights from there.
Yes you’d be better of flying Jetstar to Denpasar return $365. Stay the night. Denpasar-England return $1200 seperate tickets
Or Darwin-Singapore return $365
Then Singapore-Manchester return $1200 separate tickets
Or Darwin to Jakarta, then Jakarta to London even cheaper, but longer with stop overs

This flys you from Darwin to BKK on Thursday the 19th (also back on the 1st). You will need to sleep a night in BKK both on the way and way back…. or just go a few days earlier and have a nice holiday stop over! (that's what I'd do)
This flys you to STOCKHOLM from BKK

This flys you from STOCKHOLM to MANchester (on the same day it arrives if you choose the second option. It also flys you back to OSLO from Manchester… you stay a night in OSLO then….

Fly from OSLO to BKK… you then take the return trip (the next day, so stay one night) back to Darwin.
Total cost.. (not including meals and bags and any hotels etc… Around $1800
If I were you, I'd play around with the dates to get ideal timings (you might be able to not have to stopover at all and do it all at once… or perhaps have a holiday enroute)
The trick is the Norwegian Air flys from BKK to OLSO, HELSKINI and STOCKHOLM… so try each of those options. You might be able to do it cheaper with more finesse - this was a rough plan that I did quickly. If it was my own trip, I'd be optimising it a lot more. Consider using frequent flyer points for the shorter routes, esp DWN to BKK or DMK (DMK is also a good airport form Bangkok - buy ff points from the Ozbargain classified section from 1.1c per point if you don't have enough).

Amazing, thank you for your efforts. I'm going to click on every link now and hopefully update you all with the total cost of my flight. I haven't seen my mum and sister for nearly 10 years so getting there the most economical way will be fantastic.

If you want to keep it simple and minimise the risks and extra costs involved with multiple tickets, consider this.

That fare is available on a skyscanner from Aunt Betty who Flight Centre own. If you can get that fare direct from Aunt Betty go through cashrewards for 1.4% cashback.
Cheapest I've found totals at $1611 including 20kg of luggage
First off you book a return flight from Darwin to Singapore on Jetstar with 20kg of luggage. This costs $545AUD
- Depart Darwin Monday 16th December at 6:00am, Arrive Singapore 9:00am
- Depart Singapore December 31 at 11:05pm, Arrive Darwin 5:15am on January 1
Then to match this up with flights to the UK you book a return flight from Singapore to London on Thai Airways. This costs 997SGD, which currently is $1066AUD
- Depart Singapore Monday 16th December at 18:15, Arrive London 17th December 6:25am via a stopover in Bangkok
- Depart London 30th December 11:50am, Arrive Singapore December 31st 11:15am via a stopover in Bangkok
This is a great option/better option if you don't want to take a holiday in Sweden or Norway - nice!
Actually probably better. since its winter in Europe, the less stop overs there the less possibility of delays, or missed connections.
My alternative was fly Jetstar to Jakarta around $600 then Cathay to London $1800= around $2400 BUT Cathay is Premium Economy
