[Unobtainable Deal] Price Beat Guarantee Includes Parallel/Grey Imports from Stores without Local Warranty @ Officeworks

Moved to Forum: Original Link

It's been 12 months since this monumental deal changed our lives forever. Re-posting this for those that weren't aware or as a reminder.

Mod Edit 30/8/19. Clarification that was sent to Officeworks staff since the initial deal post that has now been passed onto us indirectly:

For clarity, below is what has changed.

"Identical Warranties" will no longer be a condition of our PBG Policy. This is the only change. All other conditions remain the same."
It must be an identical product that is in stock (same model, same specifications same inclusions)

With this information in mind, it is quite clear that the deal description no longer matches what was initially posted on 29/8/2018 or what is in the deal title now ("Price Beat Guarantee Includes Parallel/Grey Imports") or when it was posted before being edited ("Officeworks Price-Beat Now Includes Grey Stock Items"). We are therefore moving it to the forums as unobtainable, as simply updating this deal with new information that has been passed onto us has made the deal description/information and the deal title 2 different things.

As always your experience may vary from store to store, depending on the staff member, item or other factors. This was the case both before and after the policy update.

You can also see further discussion here on this subject.

What's changed?

Old Policy:

Our guarantee applies to all identical products and services with identical warranties that are:

stocked at Officeworks
in stock at our competitor; and
not excluded from the PBG (see below).

New Policy:

Our guarantee applies to all identical products and services that are:

Stocked at Officeworks
In stock at our competitors and
Not excluded from the PBG (see below)

'with identical warranties' is now removed from the policy.

Note: Price beat for overseas models/grey imports may be denied on the basis that they aren't identical.

What is its from an electrical educational store like Apple and Samsung?

    • i would't think so…it's technically not an advertised price, probably seen as 'commercial pricing' and is only really publicly known because of forums like this.

      • If you have access to the web site, it's as advertised as pricing from any other web site. But they probably would find some other way to worm out of it.

  • Thank you OP from someone who was Totally Unaware

I don' think that they will accept price match for buying bulk orders.
For example, if I price match a chair, they would only allow us to purchase max of 3 chairs.

Go to next store for another 3 then another 3…. LoL

    • Nothing in their pricematch policy to state this had this argument with officeworks the other day matching Amazon for hue lights

Just a note that they don't price match 'clearance' items.

I tried once on local stock and he straight up said no because the sticker said clearance on it. :(

I don't like this policy, although I'll benefit. It's designed to scare small businesses from entering the retail market and selling what OW sells or might sell in the future. But in short run consumers might benefit, so it's technically a good bargain until OW starts pushing prices up.

It must be an identical product that is in stock (same model, same specifications same inclusions).

Most of the parallel/grey imports have different model numbers or different types of charger which does not qualify for the pricematch. Bit of a tough luck and more of hit and miss.

  • It must be an identical product that is in stock (same model, same specifications same inclusions)

This is probably the last remaining technicality they can use. Model numbers normally change between regions even if everything else is the same. The change might be due to the provided power adapter, dual sim, or network bands. They could easily argue that there is no band 28 in that one, or the CPU is a Snapdragon and not an Exynos.

This part is very open to interpretation and I expect mileage will vary.

It's still an improvement over the last revision.

Sadly, some staff at OW won’t price match still. Sure it’s policy, but I’ve struggled to price match a few grey import items at the Capalaba and Loganholme QLD stores.
I’ve tried SD cards, UE booms, iPads and even headphones, but they won’t match Kogan or dicksmith. 😡

So to me, this is unattainable at those stores near me, and isn’t a deal.

Someone should start up a shop, put a website .com.au up, put prices at cost, deliver nothing, and use that for the price match.
edit: not sure if the "in-stock" requirement could be gotten around.

Maybe have a 13 number to call that diverts to a single person overseas call centre that says "Yes, we have that item in stock."

    • So what happens when someone actually goes to purchase an item from them(For whatever reasons, maybe it's one of the OW workers to verify that the items they have are indeed genuine and not fake), to be told they don't have it and then leave a review saying the site is fake because all their orders are canceled and or refunded without reason….? The reviews could pile up and then you end up with a store reputation with fake store items…

  • In victoria, none of the staff have even heard of Bing Lee, and automatically assume it's another Kogan and immediately try to reject the PM. I always have a lot of explaining to do when I try to get them to price match BL. The same happens at Myer and DJ. None of them have heard of Bing Lee because he treats us victorians as non existent.

  • OW just price beat Bicextech's deal on the New Apple iPhone XS Max 256GB 4G LTE Space Gray selling for $1,669, I paid $1,585.55. (via phone call).

Comes down to $1,427 if you claiming TRS.

    Decent price for local stock.

  • There's always some smartass employee that refuses to accept the change in policy. And when you trot out their own policy they sulk and abide.

I used to work at officeworks as a manager and my younger brother still does currently.

Our store still price matched even if item was a different colour or if it was a grey import (and in some cases even if model number was different). Our store manager used a common sense approach, and we tried to be as accommodating with the price matching as possible to keep the customers happy.

Obviously if there was a big price difference we would call the competing store to verify and perform further investigation.

Each stores management have their own culture, and if people abuse the policy, stores will clamp down to some degree.

At the end of the day, it’s up to the stores discretion if they are flexible and honour a deal.
