How Would You Enter This Merged Lane?

There's an intersection in Perth leading into the city which everyone seems to enter differently. The intersection is controlled by traffic lights with the right lane merging with the far right lane. I usually stay my lane and then merge at the end (option 1) while others will swap to the merging lane a lot earlier (option 2).

It can be a bit annoying when someone does this behind me and speeds up to try and overtake me as I don't believe I'm doing anything wrong, but maybe I am so would like to get everyone else's opinion.

So, how would you merge?

Edit: I may have left out some important info. Right after that intersection there's another set of lights so you're usually entering it to queue up behind cars.

if you did option 1.5 and split the middle of your two options, you "might" avoid people trying to overtake
    .

    • I kinda do by default, the lane isn't wide enough for a car to overtake so they just get really close behind

I'll give a dill award to the planner of this one .

I'd be looking for a gab and if clear would merge in both options .

    • Yeah it's not great but seems to run smoothly. I don't enter the intersection unless it's clear so I don't overtake anyone currently in the merging lane, no need to look for gaps

    • This. But I'd look for a gap, dunno what a gab is :P

This is how you know some people should have their degree(s) used for toilet paper.

Well the thing is, how fast are you getting up to the posted speed limit?

    • I'm normally just rolling up to the car ahead, this normally happens when there's already a bit of traffic. Also right after the merge there's another set of traffic lights so you sometimes just roll up to that.

    • I think this question nails it.

I have a similar intersection in my city and if the car in front of me is slow rolling I will go with option two to get around them as this is not the kind of car you want to be behind in traffic.

From my perspective you this would be solved if you did the first option, but just more quickly than you are currently.

      • There's another set of traffic lights right after it, most of the time you're just driving up to the cars waiting at those lights.

I also catch the bus through there every day so it's more that I'm observing drivers do option 1 or option 2 instead of actually causing it

I'd probably do 1, but I wouldn't say doing 2 is wrong, just unnecessary.
People doing 2 behind you are probably just people with the mindset to get in front at every opportunity.

  • If gridlock traffic I'd say only option is 1 with most of the time drivers merging 1 to 1 .

  • Maybe the road planners made a mistake, and it should have been left land must turn or something.

  • 1 is right. 2 is dangerous.

  • With caution.

  • I take Option 3, thx.

  • I've never even considered an option 2 before. Always been option 1 for me driving through the area.

    • Yeah I've never considered it, I'm glad others agree. I have a suspicion that one person does it and others follow

  • It's totally depend traffic around you. What a stupid question, merging lane not follow rules it follow head checks and road lane lines.

  • The best thing to do is glare at the other driver, flip the bird then smash the accelerator to the floor.

    • aka the Sydney way.

That's a bloody terrible intersection and poor planning. TBH I'd probably try for option 3, change into the left lane and avoid the mess on the right. Going or staying right there's 3 lanes trying to merge into one. Accident waiting to happen.

  • Why not take this route instead?

    • It's pretty difficult to turn in due to traffic backing up at the light and the only lane you can really turn into is a bus lane. This route is usually for busses and you don't want to block a bus driver from entering.

Besides I don't have a problem with the current route, I was genuinely curious if I was merging incorrectly, but it looks like all is good.

  • Drop it 2nd, floor it then BAM BAM BAM, merge sideways
