If you have a dual/multi monitor set-up or do a lot of photo editing, you might find this useful to get consistent results. I found it made a noticeable difference when I was getting prints done. It is also nice to have my two monitors giving me the same colour red.

Yes I know you can try to calibrate manually, but that has never turned out well. This takes a few minutes and it is done. LED and fluoro monitors do change their colour and brightness over time. (Wait for it………)

I paid what I thought was a good price of $265 six months ago. (Don’t forget Cashrewards are giving better deals with Amazon at the moment.

Unless you desperately want to recalibrate your monitors constantly you're better off renting one from any photography store for $20-$30 per day. Even if you need to recalibrate once a year you're still saving money in the long run.

    • As someone who has never used one before, what do you use for software when you rent one?

DisplayCal is free, works with most Spyders and other calibrators, and in my experience produces considerably better results.

        • Seconded. I got a Spyder5express (cheapest version with limited software) on gumtree for $50, and DisplayCal works muuuuuuuuch better. There's a guide out there with the exact steps for beginners to use them together.

    • Where can I rent one? I have a multi-monitor setup with same model of displays but they don't have the same color and it's slightly annoying.

      • Just search "monitor calibration hire" and your location. Most photography stores have at least one they will hire out.

With respect to photography, IMO calibration is useful for editing photos for printing purposes and not much else. Most times people view images on smart phones or monitors which aren’t calibrated and in most cases run with high contrast, saturation, and brightness. If your monitor is calibrated and you edit photos to your calibration then it might look great to you but off to most uncalibrated viewers. You have to ask yourself what is the purpose of your photo and who is the end viewer to work out if external calibration tools are of value. In most cases manual calibration is sufficient.

    • Yeah the only time I've found calibration to be worthwhile is if you're in a design or marketing field where colour accuracy matters.

  • I've found that online sites like this https://www.photofriday.com/info/calibrate get you most of the way there. Also the factory config on monitors is waaaaaay too bright. I always dial it down to ~20% brightness, 50% contrast as a starting point for blacks/whites.
