The short version is that the paid Adguard allows blocking of ads within apps, not just browsers by filtering all traffic through a local VPN on your device. Your device does not need to be rooted. From my personal experience using the 7 days trial, Adguard block popup on click ads that Blockada missed.
In Blockada you can use whichever blacklists you like. There are many included by default and only one is activated by default for performance reasons.
