Help Find Me A Good Budget GPS

Recently, my father's GPS was stolen from his car. Bloody thieves!

I am looking for a new car GPS unit. Ideally less than $100 and decent size screen.

I have already looked at my local Officeworks in Adelaide after someone posted at the link below, no luck.

Lets see what you guys come up with.

Thanks in advance.

    Any smartphone with Waze app.

    • Unless you live at my house; Waze has no idea how to get to it unlike Google Maps thanks to the median strip, which is why I no longer use Waze

But yes, a smartphone with Google Maps/Waze is all you need (unless for some reason, your dad is on P Plates and requires a dedicated GPS unit)

      • Did you mark it as an error? Waze is crowdsourced so it relies on user input to make it more accurate.

    • The GPS is for my dad. He barely knows how to use his iPhone, just calls and text. He needs something simple.

      • While I appreciate that, it doesn't get simpler than clicking Google Maps or Waze app and entering an address as you would on a dedicated GPS unit anyway. It doesnt make sense he can use one but not the other. Maybe spend a little time showing him how to use it? Better live traffic, updated maps and you don't need to spend any more money on hardware if he already has an iPhone.

  • The early iPad minis with cellular. People practically give the original away on gumtree, it's not compatible with Netflix anymore, or Minecraft, or anything really. But the GPS function still works on Apple maps, google maps, maybe even a few dedicated satnav apps would still support it.

  • eBay. Used GPSs sell for less than $30.

    • Used ones may have old maps.

Any device that with a gps and can run google maps would more useful.

      • True about the old maps. You'd have to ensure it was one of the models that came with free map updates.

  • I have used Here Maps from when it started as a Nokia app which i used with my N8, was pretty good.
I currently use the Sygic app which is generally ok. And has Offline maps, has free map updates, it also has a dash cam function amongst other things.
