SUV with safety features like eyesight

We're looking for an SUV with good safety features, one we've come across is Subaru Eyesight but even second hand they're expensive relative to buying one brand new and other SUV's with similar KM's and year. Even comparing to itself without eyesight is a huge difference even though I've read it's about a 1.5k-2k add on.

What other SUV's have similar or really good safety features for around the 20-25k mark?

features:

Adaptive Cruise Control
Lane Keep Assist With Sway Warning
Pre-Collision Braking
Pre-Collision Throttle Management

blind spot monitoring would be good too

Thanks

  • It would help if you actually explained what Subaru Eyesight does.

    • Adaptive Cruise Control
    • Lane Keep Assist With Sway Warning
    • Pre-Collision Braking
    • Pre-Collision Throttle Management
    • So like what most modern SUVs have?

      Outlander is one. AFAIK.

Also known as watching the road whilst driving

        • +1

Why watch the road when your car can do it for you?

          • +4

@HighAndDry: Radar/adaptive cruise is actually damn handy. Lane departure/Lane Keep, less so

            • +1

@spackbace: I've tried them on a few long road trips - both are actually really cool (basically living in the sci-fi future) but yeah - if you're using/relying on the lane keep feature, time to pull over for a rest break.

              • @HighAndDry: I personally turn off lane trace, as I don't like it constantly nudging on the wheel. I prefer to be in control of it that way. Radar cruise is just damn handy so you don't have to keep throttle controlling on a long trip, and can focus on the road more.

                • @spackbace: I tried radar cruise and didn’t like it. Sure, it was handy in traffic, but even the ‘close’ setting was too far back to let the driver in front know I was travelling faster and wanted t pass.

                  • +4

@Euphemistic: It would be a safe distance. So sure, it's probably a bit further away than some people might drive.

Really it just shows that you're not keeping a safe enough distance ;) That's not the car's fault

                  • +4

                    @Euphemistic:

but even the ‘close’ setting was too far back to let the driver in front know I was travelling faster and wanted t pass.

That is not what cruise control is used for lol.

                    • @HighAndDry: Well it works with normal cruise. Set your speed. As you approach another vehicle you cancel and wait behind them for them to move over and then resume. With the radar cruise you sit so far back they dont know you want to pass so you end up travelling slower the whole way

                      • @Euphemistic:

As you approach another vehicle you cancel and

True, though I note you have to cancel anyway so you can still do that with radar cruise. It's just too advanced haha.

    • thanks!

KIA's advanced driver safety package offers the same afaik. Should be standard or an option for their SUVs - Sportage, Sorento, or the new Seltos or Telluride (if that comes to Australia):

      https://www.kia.com/au/cars/sportage/features.html (just as an example)

Blind Spot Detection (BSD) & Lane Change Assist (LCA)
Blind Spot Detection (BSD) & Lane Change Assist (LCA)
The system uses sensors to identify vehicles approaching from behind, and then alerts the driver through visual alerts on the side mirror to help reduce the blind spots on the side and rear areas.

Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS)
Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS)
The AEB system continuously scans the road ahead, and will apply the brakes if it detects a potential of a collision to help prevent or lessen the effects of a frontal impact.

      Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)
      Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)
A camera mounted on top of the windshield recognises the lane in which the vehicle is currently travelling in, and provides corrective steering input in order to keep you from inadvertently crossing over into other lanes of traffic.

Just some feedback on the Sorento in case anyone is interested:

        • The active cruise is great on the highway IF you don't mind going slower than you intend. I don't notice that I've slowed down behind a car, whereas I'd usually have overtaken
(Cruising behind someone on a highway will likely result in a broken windscreen - my policy is keep my distance until I can overtake)
        • Turn the cruise off if you're going to overtake - it will take you too close to the car in front and it won't like you exceeding cruise limit to get past
        • The cruise is too slow from a standing start - the guy behind you won't make it through the lights
        • The active cruise doesn't handle approaching a slow vehicle very elegantly- you will come screaming up behind them then activate emergency braking - scares the crap out of passengers and takes the wind out of driver too - I recommend manual braking :)
        • Make sure you warn drivers of lane keep assist, when the car tries to steer you back into road works it's a bit scary the first time
        • I've noticed other cars are reading speed limit signs these days, the Sorento relies map updates and has speed limit zones pretty messed up

That might sound negative, but I use all the features and do like them, but I reckon we'll soon be considering this generation to be primitive trial versions.

October 2017 onwards RAV4 got it as standard. CHR got it standard, which came out in 2016. Both of which you should be able to get within your budget.

How big of an SUV do you need/want?

    • Not too bothered by the size of the SUV that much, thanks for this. I'll look at some 2018 rav 4's and see if they're in my price range

      • +1

Not too bothered by the size

Add 2018 onwards Camry & Corolla to that list also within budget.

or you could just pay attention on the road?

    • +1

Just for the record, have never gotten into an accident or even that close and I don't speed. I don't see how features like these could be relied upon. It's not like I'm not going to break or stop paying attention but nevertheless if cars are having features like this than it's still something I want to consider.

    • +2

Features like radar cruise control actually help you to pay more attention. You set the max speed, set the distance to maintain, and take your foot off the pedal. By not having to worry about looking at your speedo continually, you can watch the road more often.

  • Nothing beats more mass and bigger bull bars.

    • +1

Lol…. even more mass and even bigger bull bars beat it….

    • Especially if you live in Toorak or Darling Point.

  • +2

Id rather a person behind the wheel has eyesight than the car.

    • +1

      why not both

  • I have a Subaru Outback and it does a fantastic job with its lane departure and cruise control. Though mine is a year to early for the blind spot monitoring. While the driver must always pay attention, it can slow to a complete stop, say behind a car at a red light, and then will also move off by itself and maintain a safe distance behind the car in front, has a few different distance selections,

    • What year is yours? I just read online it was introduced in 2014 so 2015/2016 models should have it. Oddly, I've never seen it mentioned in the car specs anywhere.

  • 2015, there were other changes,
but it doesn't have it, pretty sure it's from 2016

  • I drive a 2011 Ford Mondeo titanium and love the adaptive cruise control. Makes for a very relaxing Highway drive. If other cars drive at the speed limit but off cruise control my car just follows instead of me having to go off cruise or overtake and have him tailgating me. Also when there are roadworks you can relax and go with the traffic automatically.

Blind spot alert another superb invention when in cities.
