    Wish sydney buses were included

  • +2

Didn’t receive the Sydney transport offer :(

  • +1

I only got the Sydney transport offer on my Velocity Escape primary card and not the supplementary one. My DJs Amex cards didn't get it (but got the offer last time)

Even cheaper off-peak fares now that they've changed the rules!

  • +3

I just noticed that the Sydney transport offer is only for mobile wallet enabled cards, so don't tap your actual Amex card if you have this offer

    • Not for me
I have three amex and the only offer I got was for the one I haven’t added to my mobile wallet

      • +6

I meant that you have to use it on a mobile wallet to take advantage of it. Read the terms and conditions of the offer i.e. you’ll have to add that one to your mobile wallet in order to take advantage of it.

The Velocity Escape Amex that got the the offer is mobile wallet enabled in my case. The Velocity Amex supplementary that didn’t get the offer isn’t mobile wallet enabled (need to fix that up before the Vogue offer starts)

        • How many AMEX cards can you add to your mobile wallet? I'm using Google Pay…so far can only add 5, all supps. When I tried to add the 6th card it says to contact the bank.

          • @ClaudeVL: I have six cards so far, with three Amexes, and about to add the seventh in a day or two:

            • Debit MasterCard
            • Visa
            • MasterCard
            • DJs Amex primary
            • DJs Amex supplementary
            • Velocity Amex primary

Need to add Velocity Amex supplementary

Have you tried contacting Amex as to why you're unable to add your sixth Amex?

            • +1

@kerfuffle: You can only add up to 6 cards to Apple Pay. Dunno about Android.

              • @cynix: I have an Android. Let me see if I can add #7 tonight to Google Pay. Otherwise I'm going to have to get rid of one …

                • @kerfuffle: I have added in total 6, 5 amex and 1 visa debit. But it didn't say limit was reached, it said contact Bank.

              • +1

@cynix: That's a mobile wallet limit - 6 across Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, other wearables (the Amex Band, etc) - from the card issuer itself.

In terms of device limit, regardless of issuer - https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204506

On Apple Watch Series 3 and later, and iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus and later, you can add up to 12 cards on a device. On earlier models, you can add up to eight cards on a device.

      • I think that might be the point of this offer, to encourage you to add the card to your mobile wallet app. I also got the offer on the only AmEx (I have four) that isn't in my Google Pay.

  • Since Sydney transport offer is for mobile wallet enabled cards, same card can be enabled on both mine and spouse card? That way I can reach weekly reward faster?

    • +1

I wouldn't do that; if you and your wife are travelling at the same time, it's essentially travelling on the same ticket and you're gonna have a fun time explaining to the transit officers …

      • If we both travel on different time. Probably it would work

        • +1

You'd have to make sure the other one travels at an hour after tap off … Are you really that bothered just to get half price trips earlier?

      • +3

Fares are charged against the card number - each mobile wallet will have a different card number, which then has it's own daily/weekly cap, weekly reward, etc - but you raise a good point - how does this deal work with multiple wallets - I assume it doesn't care as at the end of the day they're just multiple transactions from the same merchant.

        • I assume AMEX will refund up to $15 regardless of how many devices are being used to tap.

But yes, as far as Transport for NSW is concerned, those are two different cards with their own progress towards caps and rewards.

    • +1

Doubt it. I have found that I had to use my mobile wallet every time to accumulate the weekly reward on trains. Don't make the mistake I did once and tapped on with Samsung pay and tapped off with my plastic. Got two maximum fares!

      • I actually meant adding the same card on two different mobile devices.. (not using the plastic card at all)

        • Yeah, I wouldn't do it. See previous comment.

Just get your wife a supplementary card for next time.

          • @kerfuffle: not the exact same situation, but during the previous amex sydney transport offer I used my mobile wallet and my wife the plastic at the same time and got the refund back for both of us.

    • +1

You will not reach weekly reward faster because the mobile wallet device card numbers are different.

      • So I'm not convinced my previous comment was correct. If I enter my card number into Opal app's Contactless Payments Activity function, I can see all the payments made using two different mobile wallets (watch and phone). Therefore, it is possible that mobile devices/cards can be used interchangeably throughout the week, but according to @tripax above, maybe not in the same trip. Though I'm not rich enough to spend the money to find out!

    • +2

When a card is added to mobile wallet, a new virtual card number is generated, so even if you add the same card to different devices, they may not count as the same card in the Opal system for weekly cap purposes.

  • -1

Sydney transport offer is only a deal if:
    - got a mobile enabled wallet.
    - and using that tap on method all week otherwise you'll lose the half price discount after 8 trips which makes this deal cost you more!

    • It's a deal for me as it means my off-peak trips are now even cheaper and the next few weeks, I won't be meeting my weekly rewards due to needing to drive to work at least two days.

$2.52 with this Amex offer vs $3.60 off-peak or $5.15 peak for my 30ish-km train ride!

    • +2

This isn't actually true anymore - as of about a month ago they started giving the same half price discount on credit card taps as well.

  • Got email for this transport one… just have to figure out how to use it on my HTC 10…. next task today

    • Download Google Pay, add Amex card. Your phone has NFC.

Source: it was my old phone

      • thanks…. did that….

        installed… card…..

bugger…. not getting verification code from Amex for G Pay….

oh well… back to Amex to figure it out :)

  • For those without AMEX, just use the Westpac rewards code: WEST35

You get $35 off when you spend $175. Anyone can use it, works out to 20% if you spend exactly $175.

    • Can you stack it?. Spend $285 to get $85 off.

      • Not sure on this one, I don't have AMEX….someone will need to test.

    • What is this code for? Where do you enter it? Thanks

      • this code is for RedBalloon, not Transport NSW.

  • last time this promo was on, you will not get the discount if say you hop on a bus then get on a train. You will pay the full fare for each rather than getting a $2 discount on your train. So this promo now allows discount?

    • Yes - contactless has full fare parity now - https://transportnsw.info/contactless

However the bus rollout won't be complete until the end of next month - they're being activated by region.

  • The manual link provided for the 30% off transport doesn't have a submit button. Does this mean the cap has been met?

    • No, you can't enrol manually for this offer.

    • Or you weren't targeted. I was given a manual link for the Vogue offer and same thing.

  • no love for bus ridder!!

  • +1

How would it know if you're using your Amex card to tap onto a bus instead of a Train, Tram, Ferry etc.? Isn't the biller just TfNSW/Opal? I think they left buses out of the TnC's because buses weren't fully rolled out yet when they thrashed out this deal…

    https://transportnsw.info/news/2019/contactless-payments-on-…

    • Programming …

      • Well it's like buying Apple products Gift Cards from Harvey Norman, etc. with other Amex cashback offers. Ultimately the biller's the same and Amex has no way of knowing what was "purchased". That's why I think it's the same with buses.

        • Opal readers and EFTPOS machines are different from each other though.

          • @kerfuffle: Yes, but the transactions are aggregated and bulk billed by TfNSW, otherwise if every tap is a separate transaction then TfNSW would die from fees.

    • +1

If you tried tapping on with your card on an unsupported bus, it would say something to the effect of 'payment by card not supported'.

      • Yeah, I mean for buses where contactless is enabled.

    • +1

Yep, you are right mate, used on my Bus ride and got Amex email saying the offer had been used… looks it should be fine !

  • there's no save button on the manual enrolment page for the Sydney Trains deal ??

    • Because it's targeted …

  • Anyone know for Red Balloon whether the offer will trigger using your AMEX card through Paypal rather than direct using credit card? The latter has 0.89% fees that I'd prefer to avoid..

    • +1

Yeah. No PayPal aka third-party processor. Has always been the case with any Amex offer.

  • Got it for my DJs card but don't have a NPC phone..

  • I got this offer on one of my Amex cards:
Get 40% back, up to $30
Sydney Trains, Ferries & Light Rail

  • I wonder what gets people 40% off with $30 credit and others only 30% off with $15 credit 🤔 I only got the latter. Maybe location? I'm based in south-west Sydney.

    • +1

I live in western Sydney and got the 40% offer. I have never added amex to my Apple wallet. Only used the physical card. Maybe the offer is targeted for people to start using mobile wallets for such payments? Just guessing here…..

      • I have mine added to my mobile wallet from the first day I got the Amex 🤔

  • Took up the offer yesterday morning, but didn't read fine print until after I was on the train, so I tapped on with my Amex card.
Oddly I have been charged exactly $1 for what would normally be $5.15 trip. No credit received, just the charge.

    • +1

Oddly I have been charged exactly $1 for what would normally be $5.15 trip. No credit received, just the charge.

It takes about two days for the actual charge to hit your account; the $1 is a pre-authorisation

  • Got the offer, saved down, have my amex linked to my google pay but then when I scan at the terminal to tap on it never works "use one card only"

    • You don't have your other physical cards behind your phone in a pocket, do you?

      • yeh nah, took the phone out of the pocket to prevent any interference yet still got the same message on each terminal, tried all 5 at the station.

  • Does Opal offer apply to Airport train ticket ? Currently it's $18.47 from my place to International airport.

Does this mean if I tap using Amex card via Google Pay, I will get 30% off to $13.

It can't be used for Child ticket right, Adult ticket only?

    • +1

      Yes

      Yes, if you were targeted

Adult ticket pricing only; if you want Child rates, use a Child Opal card.

      • I want to use Sunday it's $2.70 all day plus I get the 40% off?

        • Tell us and let us know. I don't use public transport on Sundays.

  • So far no credit back for my trips last week using Apple Pay. Anyone get their credits?

    • Yes, for two trips made on August 27. When did you do your trips?

  • My usually daily full opal price is $5.15 one way, 5.15 x 2 = $10.3 return.
By using this amex promotion, amex charged me $14.01 ($7.005 per way), not to mention I might take off-peak train.
Has anyone checked your amex account?

    • Yeah; I got charged what I was expected.

      • Thanks.
I may need to chat with amex.

        • If you have the Opal Travel app, you can use the Contactless Payments Activity function to see what you were charged.

    • +1

AMEX charged me what I expected but they aggregated multiple trips that's why I saw like 2 days worth of trips (4) all in 1 entry.

No cash back either yet but I do get an email every time I tap

      • AMEX charged me what I expected but they aggregated multiple trips that's why I saw like 2 days worth of trips (4) all in 1 entry

This is why I log each trip with original cost, expected cost after Amex credit and credit amount in my notes app so that I know what to expect
