Tip/Solution: The Recent Windows 10 Update Causing Issues for Connected Devices (Wi-Fi Adapter Issues/DAC Failing to Recognise)

From my part the issue has been resolved, I am sharing this as a solution that worked.

Now this has happened before, a W10 Feature Update occasionally mucks up your connected devices (usually older computers with older connected devices).
Usually it is an issue with W10 installing new drivers thinking it knows better, and the whole troubleshooting / searching for correct driver method begins.

This time round though from my part the solution was a simple fix:

  1. The USB DAC failed to recognize and sound was broken, in this case I just turned it off and turned it back on.
DAC recognises and functioning as before.

  2. Next the USB WiFi Adapter (which I have had many issues with in the past) failed to connect to the network (keep trying to connect to the same network and keeps failing).
I simply pulled it out of the USB socket, and plugged it back in. Now working as usual.

I just thought I’d share since this time round it was a simple fix, and this method may save you some time.

  • Good stuff for sharing this info and trying to help people out!!

What a nice thing to do! :)

    • Yes I initially was about to start searching google for threads on similar issues (“windows 10 august update Wi-Fi adapter issues” etc) like I did in the past.
Ended up saving a lot of time avoiding going down the rabbit hole of confirming previous ‘solutions’ and attempting them.

  • We've been having the same issue with the USB adapter for the wireless mouse we use with the kids/home laptop. From time to time, it'll disconnect or we'll get an error that the usb has malfunctioned and would need to pull it out and plug again. Very frustrating!

    • I am aware those wireless mouse adapters stay plugged in, and therefore receive a lot of bumps, causing the USB port to take more exertion than usual.
Try using a different USB port.

Another possibility is the USB power saving setting.
The following is just a solution that worked on my WiFi adapter.
Find the mouse adapter in device manager, right-click and toggle the box saying “allow computer to control device to save energy” or something similar. This makes sure it is always on and prevents the adapter from going to sleep (which may be causing the issue).

      • Thanks Marge. We've done all of the above and the issue still randomly happens. Might need a new mouse.

        • I have had a similar experience with wireless mouses (intermittent function).
In my case a few gentle taps on the mouse while it is in your hand fixed it (maybe bad battery insertion / contact).
And when it was having the issue I did a tonne of researching reviews on wireless mouses.
And many seemed to have this issue with certain models (leaving poor reviews).

@thebadmachine: We've had this mouse for ages and never had this issue. The first time we've ever had the usb malfunctioned msg was within 5 minutes of restarting the laptop after the latest win10 update.

unplugging and plugging the usb fixes it but it's annoying when you have to do it multiple times while looking for bargains on ozb. The kids haven't complained yet and it is mostly used by them. They prefer the touchcreen option rather than using the wireless mouse anyway.

            • @[Deactivated]: Weird. Cause with the fix in this post my devices have been working fine ever since I performed the fix.
Go to W10 update again, and click ‘check for updates’.
I always do this after a big update, and as always there were a few more small updates that needed to be installed (possibly patching some bugs caused by the Feature Update).

@thebadmachine: I've just tried it. It says "You're up to date."

Edit: Just realised that we've had that mouse for over 4 years and that the mrs, true ozbargainer that she is, only paid $2 for it. . More likely its malfunctioning , than it is a software issue from win10. That mouse-keyboard combo had a good run - time to upgrade. Cheers MargeJ :)
