Help Me Find The Right Laptop - Budget $1000

Last time I bought a laptop was 8 years ago and lost the plot with all the choice available today.
I use the computer for browsing on the internet and download videos (yep, that kind) that I move on external hard drive. I never use Windows Office. No gaming.
I would like a bright fhd screen and a machine that can keep easily multiple Chrome tabs open without stalling.
Ideally less that $1000.

Thanks for all help.

Do you also touch the screen when you watch "that kind" of videos. In that case, my suggestion is, never buy a touch screen.
Its pretty annoying for the screen to freeze every time you accidentally touch it.

For your computing needs any FHD with atleast 8 GB Ram/16 GB preferable and SSD (Minimum 120 GB/ 256 GB preferred).
If you keep a watch out on OZB, you can frequently find a Ryzen 5 or i5/7 processor laptops for less than $ 800.
Dell's, Asus and Lenovo's are standard quality, Acer and HP may be slightly lower.

I reckon your best bet is the Lenovo E490. They're usually on sale for a bit less than $1000, e.g. see ozbargain.com.au/node/477626

You have to be patient, I wouldn't pay more than $950 for this. I believe the RAM is upgradeable, so get yourself an additional 8GB stick and this will be super powerful for the price and it'll have a decent build as well. Not as good as the T or X series Thinkpads, but far better than the consumer grade stuff.

Have you considered watching those movies on a Nintendo new 3ds?

I was supposed to find some site stream in 3D whilst I was in the rest room.

  • Can someone recommend a decent 15.6'/17' laptop with a glossy bright screen (300 nits or more). I need it mainly for multimedia and browsing. Absolutely no gaming. Quick responses appreciated!!
