Fix The Tyre or Replace It?

My front right tyre in my CRV is deflating constantly. Every time I pump it up, it ends up getting to about 10-15 psi over a few days. It's driveable but obviously I'd like to fix it.

I'm not sure what's wrong with it - but a visual inspection I can't find any objects embedded in it - so maybe it's the valve?

My tyres came with the car and it's about 5 years old and has 60k on it.

Just wondering, should I bother fixing it or is it time to just get 4 new tyres anyway?

    Replace.

Tyres, regardless of whether they're worn or not, are recommended to be replaced 6 years after date of manufacture.

There's 4 numbers printed on the side wall.
"NNYY" - NN is a number between 1 and 52 and represents the "week" of a year. "YY" represents the year of manufacture.

The rubber starts getting hard and can start cracking after a few years.

    • ok if it's what i'm thinking of, it's 2214, so mid 2014.

Seems a bit later than i would've thought. I bought the car as as an ex-demo in like september 2014 - so would've thought after time as a demo etc. and just the tyre sitting in a warehouse somewhere, it would've been a lot earler than that.

but yeah, regardless, it looks like it's time to replace the tyres.

        Yes, that's the one!

Going by your pictures, if you don't replace it now, you'll need to replace it real soon anyway. So better to do it now and not have to worry about it deflating anymore.

By the look of that tread depth it's about time to replace the tyres - 60k is pretty good.

  • Replace is a very vice option

If you’ve driven it with low air, you’ve put additional strain on the side walls of the tyre and weakened it further.

Replace - and consider replacing all four considering the age and tread depth.

Bridgestone have a 4 for 3 on at the moment that has been posted here, might be worth checking out.

    • thanks yeah looks like it's a definite replace job.

So what do you think of costco? apparently, they're cheap but only have expensive brands - also they won't do wheel alignment which is necessary when replacing tyres?

      • I think some Costco garages do wheel alignments, but most don’t.

You can always get a wheel alignment elsewhere - Bridgestone do it for $50 or so.

Have had tyres fitted at Costco on one occasion with no complaints. But a second time I ordered 4 tyres and when I turned up, they could only find 3 of them. Turned out they had accidentally fit the other one to another customers car, meaning that customer left the shop with one misfit tyre.

After that episode, I’ve no intention of going back to this particular Costco (Auburn NSW). The one I had my tyres fit at the first time was great though (Marsden Park).

  • Costco have a pretty good rep for cheap good tyres, but shop around, there are always good tyre deals somewhere.

A wheel alignment is only really necessary if your current tyres are wearing unevenly or if your car pulls noticeably to one side when you let go of the steering wheel.

You can get an alignment at most tyre services if necessary

  • If you can't see a nail or screw in the tyre, it is possible that you have cracked the rim.

If you can take the wheel off and have a look inside the wheel, you might see a hairline crack. Even use a little soapy water to see if any bubbles appear.

  • Repair might be cheap and get you a few more months. Consider putting it on the back as it is reduced load there.

I just had a valve replaced on a tyre that was deflating. Couldn’t see anything in it eventually took the wheel and put it in the pool and found the leak. Tyre shop said it probably should be replaced but the tyre was still legal and rego was coming up so I’ll run it a few more months while the bank account recovers.
