Can I Negotiate with Telstra?

I just wrapped my two years with Telstra NBN. They have just bumped up my fee, by 15 bucks, which pissed me off. Should I call them and negotiate or even better given NBN has stabilised in my neighbourhood, should I start shopping around? If I get a media pack out of it, it would make me smile!!

Any suggestions….

    Ring them and find out

I use to do contracts for telstra, call and immediately ask to be put towards the disconnections team. Should be easy from there on to negotiate, haggle with them for at least a few days and drag them down if you must stay with them. However do not sign up to another contract.

    Or move to Aussie Broadband.

    • do it on 24x7 chat, not call up

        Disagree.
By calling and saying you want to 'close the account', you'll get to speak to someone in Australia, who will be empowered to do a lot more for you than someone reading from a script overseas.

but then if you DONT sign up for it, there's no record of the offer (mysteriously always seems to happen)

          • @87percent: Which is why you know what you are prepared to accept or walk away from. With phone you either take the deal then, or walk away and change provider.

          • @87percent: 24x7 is alright but the saves team has a much better bargaining toolset than them.

          • @87percent: There’s always records. Every time an account is opened interactions must be left.
And an access log is always there in Siebel.

            • @tobi: Yeah they should be, but it's still extremely common to hear people say you were offered this by whoever and there's no record of it when you call.

              • @87percent: If the Dealer was lazy and there's no interactions left, if you can establish when a call was made they can see the account was opened at the very least and see no follow-up has been done. Escalate the issue to a complaint and make them escalate it again and make them call you back at a time that suits you. Puts you in a better position.

I did contracts long enough that I basically know how to worm my way out of contracts and into better deals. I've done it with Telstra, TPG, Vodafone and soon Optus lol…..

I did the same when I was being moved to a plan that was $20/mth more expensive, but with more data that I was never going to use. I was offered an 'off-market' deal that brought me back to the original deal except I had to pay for landline phone calls (also something I don't use).

    Try it.

It's best not to negotiate with terrorists

    • Better fit for the LNP with what they did to the NBN.

  • I'm paying $100 per month to get the Telstra NBN unlimited internet bundle/phone calls with the additional premium speed boost (nbn tier 100).

    I'm on HFC

the google speed test currently showing in middle of the day …

65.8 Mbps download ~= 8.1 megabytes per second download
26.6 Mbps upload ~= 3.3 megabytes per second upload

Hopefully when cabletv and bigpond cable removed from the cable, speeds will increase due to additional frequencies on offer.

You can see a comparison of prices here for nbn 100
    https://www.canstarblue.com.au/internet/premium-nbn-speed/

telstra one is usually $120 - my bill shows a credit each month

  • I'm surprised they forced you on to a new plan. I finished on an old plan where I paid $95/mth for unlimited data with 100Mbps (and other phone benefits I never used). I was out of contract so I tried to negotiate and even after talking to disconnections team, they said only option was to move to a new plan rather than discount a legacy plan. I ended up getting the new unlimited $90/mth plan with unlimited data, a 100Mbps speed boost for 12 months, no minimum term (cancel anytime), and first two months free. I thought this seemed good enough and saved me having to change companies. It probably helps I have a perfect billing history through DD and a $150 phone plan as well with Telstra.

(funnily enough I would've been happy with a $10/mth discount anyway on the old plan)

I feel Telstra previously used to give out discounts or fee waivers alot easier (I once got three months free due to my speed only hitting 65Mbps) but I think they've probably made the right business choice to streamline plans to a minimum.

(FYI I discussed with them mid August 2019)

    • Should've mentioned this was on 24x7 chat

  • My man cancelled his Telstra internet and phone when he moved in with me and they said “Wait! We can give you a better deal”, so definitely you should. I recommend finding a better deal first and ask them to match it.

  • I always negotiate through phone call via the disconnections team, and managers. NBN is not in my area yet, but I managed to get a cable plan, unlimited, 100mbps, from $89 to $59/month due to occasionally being slow due to congestion in peak hour

  • Wow, thanks a lot guys. This is all truly helpful. I will call them now, and better yet also look for competing providers.

Are there anyone who is getting something like Foxtel or Netflix on a combo deal with broadband providers? IS that still a thing!!

  • Oh so many people that want thier hand held these days.
Poor OP cant make up his mind.
    What should he do?

Will of course you should shop around for the best deal !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once you have the best deal run it past Telstra if you wish to stay with them.

Unlike Telstra's superior mobile network, NBN is the same "commodity" being sold by everyone so tell them that and put them in the hot seat.

Offer a better deal or loose yet another customer Telstra

Yes, I called them this morning, and basically said you had me for two years paying you a premium, yet you pull this shit on me. Let's cancel it.

They tried to call my bluff, said I need to pay a cancellation fee…then I had to fight back saying the contract was already up…. The song and dance went on.

Then they buckled, and gave me a new price for 90 bucks. Went from 130 to 90…..actualy 115 to 130 to 90. Not bad for an hour of my time.

Thanks a lot fellas…..and yes, sarcasm by some of you is well justified. Always shop around you don't owe corporations shit!!

    • Probably a bit late to reply but i was just browsing shit on ozbargains.

      I don't think you got a deal it's $90 on their site

Unless of course your download is higher than 40mbps
