I Want The Best Value Full Comprehensive Car Insurance

Hi fellow bargainers,

I am a 22 year old male, on my full license, have not had any infringements and no demerit points lost.

I am looking for the best value full comp insurance. I am currently insured by RACT, paying around $101 a month, I know I can get cheaper however, I just haven't really looked much.

I have looked at youi and aami, and I can get full comp with them for about $90 a month.

Are there any other companies you use that I should be checking? Looking for good full comp options, hire car, fire and theft, etc.

I drive a 2007 Subaru Liberty, valued at $8000 with RACT. Located in Tasmania.

Thank you :)

Lol - you are paying over $1000 per year for a car valued at $8000?

Sell the car and use public transport??

    • +4

Why do you think I am asking for help? Public transport is not an option for me, I drive pretty far distances, and like freedom.

      • +6

bluberry means - "why don't you just have 3rd party insurance?"

        • +5

Because then if I have an at fault accident, I'm $9000 out of pocket - $8000 for my car, and $1000 for my excess. What value would you normally have 3rd party up to?

          • +1

@dTer: You're not really 9K out of pocket because you could buy another car for 2K and your 8K car is getting worth less and less every year (if you replaced it with the exact same make and model and year and km). Plus you can sell it for scrap and parts later and maybe even recover $1K from it after wrecking.

            • +1

@Quantumcat: @Quantumcat Buy another car for 2k..you reasoning is in par or worse than the dumbest I've heard.

              • @neirboca: You buy a car for $8K. 5 or 10 years later you have an at fault accident. How much is it going to cost you to get a car of the exact same make and model and year and km, and little dings and scratches accumulated over that time? Definitely not $8K - if it was then sign me up to own a car that keeps its value forever!

          • @dTer: how much is ACTUAL market selling price of 07 liberty in tassie ?

            coles 3rd pt. $200pa w/ excess $450

            • @dcep: @Hexo funny take Quantum cats advice. It's not good. When a cat is baked at or less than $5-8k I'd look at 3rd party.

But you are still young so maybe not.

Keep in mind 80% of the insurance market is owned by 4 big players. So even if you get quotes from various brands, chances are they are owned or underwritten by one of the same parent companies that you've already had a quote from :) So dont be surprised if your quotes come out the same.

Anyway, to help you in your search, when I get car insurance quotes each year, to avoid paying the lazy tax, I usually get quotes from the following:

    Allianz
    RACV
    Aami
    Budget Direct
    Woolworths
    Coles

I'm currently insured by Allianz and RACV on my two cars.

    • Thank you, I'll check out Allianz!

      • bingle

        • Have you made a claim with Bingle?

Their reviews tell a horrible story if they're to be believed.

But were the cheapest when I just checked a few.

      • Budget direct worked out cheapest for me. But it's not that hard to get quotes from all of them. I believe they can now take rego number and fill in all car details for you.

  • I want to join the side of the insurance agency with risk/reward figures like that :)

Advise if you have no big assets get no insurance even 3 rd part and join the winners club of beating them .

BTW 8k car no where near enough lol .

I also have a 2007 car and like altomic recommended, I only have 3rd party because I consider myself to be a safe driver and it is not worth the premium to cover such an old car.

I think Budget is quite good with their prices, especially if you opt for a higher excess.

I found Bingle to be the cheapest, even for Tasmania. but they only offered 'market value'. We were with them when we were living in NSW. Never had to claim so can't really comment on the service. Anyway once we moved to Tassie switched to RACT, because they were only slightly more expensive than bingle (rest of the main stream insurers were way more expensive than RACT). We pay about $55, for a car valued at $13499. I remember my state bank car insurance quote was reasonable too.

    • +3

Bingle are the cheapest for me in NSW too. I have claimed through them and the process was easy. You have to do it all online but it was not a problem for me. Everything was fixed quickly, and because they are owned by Suncorp they use the same repair places that the other Suncorp brands use.

I've been with Bingle for more than 10 years - no one else has come close to beating them on price.

I Want The Best Value Full Comprehensive Car Insurance

    Don't we all?

I am looking for the best value full comp insurance.

Then go out and do some quotes. We can't do that for you. All these companies have online quotes systems.

Remember budget ones are tougher on paying out etc than other companies etc.

  • Wow!
I just insured a $27,000 vehicle for $500/year with AAMI. Cranked up the excess to $1500 to achieve that price and I'm twice your age, but even so!

    • +2

44 year old drivers are LESS likely to have a total write off/claim compared to sub 25 year old drivers.

Hence why its reflected in the price the OP is paying.

People scream about the cost of insurance, but its really just a numbers game to them. Age, type of car, where you live etc all factors into it.

      • +1

Yeah, I realise that (hence mentioning my age), but even so… They're rating this kid as ~6 times more risky (double the premium on a third of the cover value), it just surprises me it's that much.

    • -1

      You cranked UP the excess?

      • +4

Depending on the savings on the premium, by the time he actually makes a claim, he will have saved far more than the additional excess he's paying.
I haven't had a claim in 20 years, henc why I bump my excess up, because the money I've saved over the years far outweighs the additional excess I pay IF I ever make a claim.

        • +3

I’m with @nafe. Bump up the excess. Save the premium difference and make sure you have enough in quick funds to cover the excess if necessary. I have saved over the years. One claim, driving since last century. I’m in front.

  • TIO, NAB, and GIO were recommended for car insurance in NT in Choice's comparison last year. YMMT as every one has different inclusions/exclusions and the best score of the lot was only 77%.

  • Thanks all. Purchased a YOUI policy which ended up saving me about 30% a month. They were the closest cover I could find to my current insurer at the best price. Roadside is also included, I pay for that at the moment :) So about a 40$ overall saving.

    • There's a little hack I knew someone used to do with YOUI insurance on their sailboat insurance. I'm not sure whether it works with cars or not but you start on a monthto month third party plan then you roll it up to comprehensive which takes effect immediately but you don't have to start paying the extra cost until the following month. When next month hits you roll down to third party insurance where you get a refund for the extra you payed for comprehensive but comprehensive remains active until the following month then you just keep repeating the roll up/down every month so you effectively always get comprehensive cover at the cost of third party…

      • +5

Sounds like a surefire way to have a claim dismissed… clever though.

  • +1

Woolworths and BudgetDirect cheapest for me in VIC. I just change between them each renewal so as not to pay any lazy tax, and get a Woolies gift card etc. sign up promotion.

  • +1

For $8k car, risk VS value, $1K full comp insurance isn't of value
You are paying $12.5% of the car value to insure it.
At 23yo you should be at a level to assess your own driving style, habits and weigh up the risks VS value scale.
If you constantly run late yellows, drive and text or speed then perhaps keep full comp insurance.

  • +1

    Thread should be closed, but…

For a lower value car don’t pay for extras like windscreen, hire car (unless it is critical for your job) etc. hike up your excess to save on premiums. Then don’t crash! Save money on the policy, but put it in a rainy day account for later.

  • I just signed my 22yo daughter up with ubicar for $46 a month for full comprehensive with a $750 basic excess and $450 age excess.

    • -1

What is your point? Going to tell us what you had for breakfast?

    • "The UbiCar app is free to use, and tracks your driving using telematics, so we can give you a driver score."

bye bye privacy, it may suit some who dont care about such things, but i dont want anyone tracking me wherever i go

  • Try this link a wealth of car ins in for here: https://www.finder.com.au/car-insurance

  • Try QBE

    • Be very careful with QBE, check ALL the fine print, and make sure you understand their foreign staff….Have had bad experience with them

      • Just recently got into an accident. Not at fault. The other party was uninsured. Lucky I have comprehensive insurance. So far process is going nice and smooth. Car has gone for repair with my choice of repairer. I would stand by my recommendation.
