fair price for clutch + brake pad change for 2010 Honda Jazz?

hello! i own a 2010 Honda Jazz GE 1.3 with 150k kms. I bought the car in 2017 with 99k kms. recently i noticed my clutch is giving out a grunting noise in 1st and 2nd gears.

I had asked for a quotation for:
a) supply and change clutch $1000 incl labour
b) supply and fit all brake pads $275 incl labour

all these charges reasonable in Melbourne?

Clutches don't make noise they slip.
    Sounds like a gearbox problem
One way to test a clutch is load it.
Drive up a steep hill in a high gear if the engine revs and you don't increase in speed its on its way out.
I think the prices are very reasonable

    • i drive up a steep hill every day. engine revs and speed increase in both gear 1 and 2. no issues with gaining speed.

could you elaborate why it's a gearbox problem? the "grunting" only occurs in gears 1 and 2, sometimes gear 3.

      • The prices are reasonable but the grunting might be a bearing (front layshaft bearing maybe). I'd be asking what happens if they change the clutch and the noise is still there.

  • Try it in a higher gear like 3 or 4 and see if you notice the car revving a bit like its still In neutral.
I could be wrong it's hard to tell what it is without hearing it.
Does it grunt when your changing gears ?
If it was the clutch it would do it every gear I think.
If you could explain more about the noise is it constant in those gears ?
Does it make noise in neutral?
Does it make noise when you push the clutch in without touching the gearbox

  • higher gears 3 and 4 - no grunting

Does it grunt when your changing gears ?
    - the actual changing of gears - no grunting.
    - grunting occurs when i bring the clutch to "biting point" from zero to 1st gear, or 1st to 2nd gear, sometimes 2nd to 3rd gear.

If it was the clutch it would do it every gear I think.
    - higher gears 3 and 4 - no grunting

If you could explain more about the noise is it constant in those gears ?
Does it make noise in neutral?
    - no grunting in neutral.

Does it make noise when you push the clutch in without touching the gearbox
    - pushing in the clutch - no grunting.

    • 1st and 2nd gear probably ground to dust…

I still think the other poster is right it's a gearbox issue.

What did the mechanic say? Get a second opinion from another mechanic?

  • Brakes pads ain't hard to change either mate but if you have no idea about cars or mechanical minded a little just forget about saving and pay him the 150 cause that's what you would save….

  • Oh OK so there's no grunting when your driving just when you releasing the clutch.
Well in that case it probably is the springs in the clutch

Take it to the mechanic who quoted you that and ask him for his opinion. Especially if you trust him .

    • If this is the case wouldn't it happen on all gears?

    Bendix pads $150
    Jazz clutch exedy standard $400
If his using them parts get him to do the job

  • Machine the flywheel is recommended would say it in the manual

    • if it's the springs in the clutch, would the solution = replacing the entire clutch set?

machining the flywheel will cost extra?

  • Do you trust this mechanic?
Some mechanics don't have the machine to do it so they take it to another mechanic who does .
Yeh when you buy a new clutch you get everything.

  • Well…You have to find out if there's a problem with the vehicle first. If so, get quotes from different mechanics to avoid overpaying for the repairs

  • If the noise is in 1 ~ 3rd gears and the clutch operation feels normal, it could possibly be either the input shaft bearing or a layshaft bearing.

A worn clutch noise is more like a scratching/screeching type of noise. Worn throwout bearing sounds like a rattling noise only when the clutch is pushed in.

Either way, you need to have it diagnosed correctly, because you could spend the money on the clutch kit only to find out it was a bearing and the gearbox has to come out again
