Virgin - Bid to Upgrade to Business Class Domestic

I just received an email saying I'm eligible to bid for an upgrade to business class.

It's probably not worth it as it's Adelaide to Melbourne, and Melbourne to Adelaide.

Has anyone bidded? What's a bid, which would be worth it if won?

Flight to Melbourne is like 6am in the morning, and return is Sunday evening.

Thanks

Follow the link and it'll let you know what the minimum bid is. I've won it a few times with min bid + $10

    • That'd be awesome haha

  • Yep, I’d never been before, so I bid at the very minimum between $110 and $120 for my (over the span of six days) Sydney to Adelaide, Adelaide to Melbourne and Melbourne to Sydney legs (essentially double my original economy flight cost, so Sydney to Adelaide would be about $230 for Business Class for example)

Last time I flew Sydney-Melbourne, they wanted $250 to upgrade; hard pass

  • It says buy now for $330, and to bid it only goes as low as $110

    • If you’re keen to try it, just bid $110. It’s definitely not worth $330 on top of your economy fare. How much was your original flight?

      • $200-230 return

    • its virgin DOMESTIC business class….. don't get too excited.

      • It's not too bad. Personally I can't stand any flight longer than 2.5 hours without being in a bigger chair with more recline.

45 degree recline seems to be the cutoff, where any less and I can't sleep.

yeah but we're talking about paying a extra $330 for ADL to MEL, a 1 hour flight, isn't worth it in my books for what you get.

  • Ive done it a few times, if you can eat and drink $110 worth then go for it, or else dont bother

  • I've bidded Perth to Melbourne about $330. It was only tad above the minimum. Got it.

I've bid the minimum a couple of times and got it, but for short flights it's not really worth it in my humble opinion. I usually book Economy X anyway, so have enough leg room. Don't need food on a 1-2 hour flight, just stash a couple of muesli bars in my bag just in case.

    • With domestic flights, I find economy X represents better value than business. You get priority check in with increased leg room. Also the bags seem to come out faster at the destination.

  • I paid to upgrade from economy to business last month from Perth to Melbourne for two people for the minimum bid of $400. Originally paid $320 one way for economy, so the total per person was $720 one way. To buy the ticket outright one way for one person it was $2000 at the time. I was the Red, lowest tier with Virgin also. I earned business status credits for that trip.

    • I didn't earn business status credits for my upgrades, just the usual 7

      • I flew Economy X from Melbourne to Perth, 2 people. I earned a pooled 30 status points. I upgraded from economy X to business and earned 60 pooled status points from Perth to Melbourne.

You didn't get the business status credits. I suggest you check your fare class again, look like you got status credit for Getaway fare from Melbourne to Perth and Elevate status credit from Perth to Melbourne. If you got business status credit, you would have got a minimum of 90 status credits one way per person.

          • @electriccurio: This seems most likely, my bad, ignore the above comment regarding status credits earned! Prices and other details are correct though.

I earned business status credits for that trip.

No you didn't. Read the T&C you only earned credits on your original booking class, not on the 'upgraded' fare class.

      • I earned 30 points pooled from Melbourne to Perth, and earned 60 points pooled looking at my activity statement. I earned no extra velocity points.
Perhaps I booked the getaway fare there, and the elevate fare return?

        • Perhaps I booked the getaway fare there, and the elevate fare return?

          Most likely…..

          As

          https://www.virginaustralia.com/eu/en/specials-offers/upgrad…

          says

Will I receive extra Points or Status Credits if I am successfully upgraded?
No. Velocity Points or Status Credits can only be earned for the original booking.

  • 1 and a bit hour flight? Not worth it.

  • Yeah, I agree even for $110 each way it's not worth it.

If I was flying Friday evening I probably could smash $50 of booze but I'm not haha

Online the flights are $550 each way, which is ridiculous!

You can do only one leg, you don't need to do the whole thing.

      • If you are doing carry on only, if they opened Melb premium entry you just walk straight into the lounge: https://www.businesstraveller.com/business-travel/2017/12/05…
      • If after lunch then you have the alcohol benefit, depending how you're getting home in Adelaide
      • You can see how many seats are available by doing a new booking on Virgins site. There are 8 seats, so if most are available you'll probably sit next to no-one

I wouldn't upgrade the 6am flight given no entry, lounge only opens 5:30am.

      • I'm flying with a mate, I already have Virgin lounge passes. That's why I'm not bothering, otherwise the return leg would be worth it for $110
