What experience (if any) have you had with personalized pricing on Amazon?

Hi all,

Just interested if any of you have benefited from personalized pricing on Amazon i.e. the price of an item you have been monitoring has gotten progressively cheaper, to lure you in to a purchase.

I think I just experienced it today, buying a Labo VR Expansion Kit 2. I bought the Labo VR starter set from Amazon for $49 a couple of weeks, back and then I was on the fence about buying Expansion Kits as well, seeing as they were both $25 ($4 less than RRP). Since then I have been checking back (i.e. searching Labo VR) everyday to see if the prices have changed. In this time, Expansion Kit 2 had slowly lowered in price down to less than $15 (triggering me to finally buy them both). The price seems to have jumped back to $25, but I have my bargain. All the items were through Prime.

Anyone else witnessed something similar?

  • That's…. either a really slick marketing trick or a crazily dystopian marketing trick, I'm not sure which.

I wonder if it can be gamed - are there unit limits? Or can you buy like 99 and re-sell for say, 20% off RRP?

  • I've found adding something to my wish list the price drops probably 80% of the time within a couple of days. Likewise adding something to my cart but then not actually checking out and removing it from my cart will usually cause a price drop. Don't know if it's a coincidence or not but I buy a fair bit via Amazon so there's an awful lot of coincidences happening if that's all it is. It's at a point where I never buy something right away unless it's a daily deal etc and instead add it to my wish list and watch for a few days.

    • Amazon US stuff ordered from Amazon.com.au will vary every few days based on currency fluctuations

      • True but this also happens with stuff on Amazon AU sold locally so it's not that, at least not in all cases. In many cases I'm seeing a significant percentage change within a day or two. Price drop lasts a couple of days then returns to the previous price.
