Help Me Choose My Next Laptop

Hi ya'll for years i was in the Apple ecosystem. 3 years ago i broke free getting my Galaxy S8 (now Galaxy S10+) and a Gear S3 which i still have today. My biggest apple asset was my MacBook Pro which i have owned since 2011 and have been patching with replacement parts since. She's getting on now and MBP's are so bloody expensive! So i figured this greater community would know a few things and school me on some laptop knowledge!

I use it for a lot of digital design and print media for my side hustle but other than that its just the general browsing and streaming of Netflix/Stan/YT & Kayo Sports. I don't game and the likely programs would be Microsoft Office & Adobe Creative Cloud.

I'm genuinely open for anything tbh. I've never had a laptop or any electrical device last me 8 years before so ideally a MBP would be my go to but idk if she's worth the money…now that im saying that wow…i can't believe i'm 8 in.

Idk if it makes a difference but preferably purchase in store to help those Bricks and Mortar fellas.

    1. Maximum amount you are prepared to spend?
    2. How important is the LCD's colour accuracy to you?
    3. 13, 14 or 15inch, or bigger?

Broke free lol, please, you had a Mac laptop last 8 years, you would be lucky to get a windows one last 2.

My current laptop is a dell e6230, which I received at the end of 2012. Still going strong. All my other windows laptops (3 in total) that I've owned has lasted at least 4 years. I dont get the perception that windows laptops break after a year or two. Or maybe I'm just lucky?

      • +1 for the E6230, I still have mine from when I was at school which I now use for uni but have a desktop and a few other laptops too, all of which I have had for a few years. Oldest is probably 2011 or 2012 which is still running fine.
No-minimal issues with any of them.

        • I got mine from school as well hahahahaha. Currently using it for uni; runs blender, solidworks and MATLAB flawlessly (just a bit slow on the renders, thats all)

    • Sigh, another uneducated comment. I have a Lenovo T420 still alive today. 8 years old this year. Still works like a charm. What was that about Windows laptops only lasting 2? Macbooks aren't free from their own issues - overheating, keyboard problems…etc.

I own Macbooks as well, so I'm not against Apple products, but I see it for what it is - their products are just like everyone else's. They're all made from the same parts, in similar factories in China and elsewhere, all with their own engineering oversights and/or problems.

I've never gotten why people like to defend Apple. They don't care about you. If they could screw you over, they would in a heartbeat, just like any other large corporation.

I'd suggest the Surface Book 2 - gorgeous, quick, thin, fantastic battery, and Microsoft quality/warranty.

  • the 16 inch MacBook Pro is going to be a ripper. Adobe on the 16 inch will run like a dream and if you have an ipad you can use Astropad as a Wacom tablet.

    • Knowing Apple, the price may not be a ripper lol!

  • The new 2019 MacBook Air.

  • Dell XPS 13 or 15

I like Surfaces a lot but if you want to use a monitor sometimes they lack the plugs. You have to use a Surface dock, which costs a lot extra and then it can't project to two 4K screens at once.

If you're never planning to use a monitor and you would be carrying it around a lot then get a Surface, they weigh a fraction of an XPS.

  • Hi AADGRM. Sorry I got questions for yourself. I am just beginner. Do you recommend Macbook for design work for its colour accuracy e.g 100% SRGB ?

Can I know if you use drawing pad and stylus such as wacom? And which external monitor do you recommend (around $500)?
