Do we really need app control for the toilet? What features are on this toilet that couldn't be accessed from a small panel mounted on the wall?

What model toilet are you using? These things are quite long.
It's good, just be aware it's bigger than the original version. Particularly, you'll need to be sure there is enough space for the back end.
The app controls are okay, mainly allows control of auto light, seat temperature timing settings, self cleaning etc.
The manual buttons allow simple controls like positioning, water temp, bidet/butt wash and air drying.
