  Why don’t people just grow this if it’s so expensive? My dad grows a plant every year and gets a shitload saffron out of it, giving most away

    Long story short: genuine saffron is expensive because it's extremely labour intensive. No attempts at mechanisation of harvesting have been successful.

    Each flower has three threads. Each flower is picked by hand. Each flower is de-threaded by hand. It takes 150,000 flowers to produce 1kg of saffron.

    Beware cheap saffron. It's usually adulterated, old, or otherwise compromised.

    Define "sh*tload"? You tend to get one flower per bulb, and 3 stigma per flower…

    as @yak said, each flower only has 3 stigmas of saffron. Are you sure your dad is growing saffron?
    Saffron bulbs can be purchased but you need thousands to make 10 grams of saffron. I don't know how efficient that would be instead of just buying the saffron.

      I don’t know much about saffron and I doubt he does so he could be growing something completely different haha. Not sure what the stigmas or bulbs are but I remember seeing a huge plant in his garden which he said was saffron. It could have been more than one plant planted together cause it had quite a few flowers. Later on he gave me a container full of these little red things he had dried out in the sun saying it’s saffron.

    If it is $5.00/g then = 1 kg= 5000$
    Which makes it more expensive.
    Also I would need to trust that it is good quality.
