  • I had a look at it (I'm trying to insure quite a long trip and man is it expensive!) but it's missing many of the really big names. Unfortunately, I think this is one area where you have to do the hard yards. I've used Westpac travel insurance in the past and it's usually cheaper, but I've never had to make a claim.

  • We just bought a 49 day worldwide policy off these guys, seemed to be the best I could find. Give them a go?

    https://www.travelinsuranz.com.au/

    • thanks mate, it seems this is the cheapest that i can get for comprehensive insurance so far

  • Or you could try these guys. http://www.duinsure.com.au

I think they were pretty evenly matched. I hope this helps!

  • I've gotten cover from QBE everytime I travel with - http://www.travelinsurance.com.au/

I used the promo code TAXMAN for an extra 10% off

    • thanks niune, it seems qbe is the most expensive even with the discount code

  • I usually use http://www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au and have used http://www.1cover.com.au once also, and made a claim. Both appear to be afilliated with Mondial Assistance and Allianz. Both have similar coverage levels although TID is usually cheaper. The claim process went fine.

I think it is important to compare coverage levels. What I look for in particular is the rental car excess coverage as a quick indicator of the value you are receiving.

Use the promo code WINTER2011 for 10% off TID.

  • Has anyone had any experience with CoverMore? It's $150 cheaper for me than the next more expensive.

    • still expensive for me

      • Covermore is cheaper for me because you don't have to select US as a destination if it's less than 20% of your trip. Premiums for the US are significantly more expensive (maybe because of the cost of health care there?) and most of the other insurances require you to select US/Worldwide as the destination if you're there for more than 72 hours. I'm there for 10 days which is less than 10% of my trip. So, it's not that CoverMore is cheaper in general, but their policy means I can use a cheaper region.

There's also world nomads, but note that you have to list large articles (like expensive cameras) separately.

  • DU insure.. can use moneybackco as well. Compared heaps of different agencies and they were the cheapest.

  • I checked one of these sites (sorry forget which one) before going away and all the insurances were cheap but offered by companies I had never heard of. Seemed really dodge. If anyone finds a site that the big players also are part of, I'd like to see it.
In my view, it's all good until you suddenly need to be airlifted back to Oz for $50,000 and a clause means they won't pay.

    • what big players are you referring to?
      Lloyds, Allianz, QBE?

    • That is why you need to read the PDS. Even the "big players" have exclusions and clauses. If you have never heard of the company before it can be a good idea to see who the underwriter is. This should give you some confidence that the policy is backed by a big player.

    • mate if you buy basic insurance, don't expect you got cover everything, read the product features and buy if that products suit your need.

no insurance company that take the risk alone, they also do hedging by buying reinsurance product from other insurance company. even big player do as well.

recent example sun corp, if sun corp never re insure their insurance business, they will get more than 200 million bill, in fact they have $200 millions cap lost on Queensland flood this year.

  • Travel Insurance Direct is what I've used - use code TIDTHANKS to save yourself an extra $10.
They sent me an email when I got back from my trip saying if I needed to claim etc etc. and then 6 weeks later I received another just in case I'd forgotten anything! Highly recommended and thanks to the positive comments from others by using the search function here at OzBargain :)

    • TIDSAVE 10% off (if your policy is under $100 obviously use the $10 code) other wise use this one.

  • I always have had the best result with www.comparetravelinsurance.com.au. The compare more of the insurers, and show more detail on the levels of cover than the rest . also nice lad out site .
