Any laptop for this price is bound to be junk.

Grab something on Gumtree second hand. Find something with 4-8gb of ram, a decent sized screen and semi-new CPU.

Chuck an SSD in it and it'll be better than any laptop you can buy for $200 new.

    • It's over budget now, lol.
SnowDragon is right… the budget's too thin.

If OP doesn't get lucky on gumtree, maybe they can look into some ChromeOS Laptops instead?

    • I just bought a Latitude 7440 1080p non touch, Core i7 4600U,8Gb RAM, 128G SSD and 500Gb HDD and Win10 Pro for $325 delivered on eBay last week.

It's in decent condition, with a minor dent on the top, indicated battery life of 5 hours.
And it flies, Latitudes are a nice size compromise in size/weight/toughness, look pretty nice and most of them are desktop machines for the vast majority of their lives.

There were heaps of Core i5 options in this price range or lower, the i7 was a bit of a standout (especially with Dual Drives)

Here's a nice 256Gb SSD example from my searches.
      $266 with PINEAPPLES code
      1080p screen
      i5-4210U,
      8Gb RAM,
      256G SSD,
      Win7

If you want a Graphics card, bigger 15" screen or numberpad, Latitude 6540 are another option.

  • Increased budget to $450, preferably looking for a new laptop

    • Kogan has some alright spec'd laptops for $459 - 8GB of RAM and a 1TB HDD.

Would you be using it on the go? Would a desktop PC be fine?

    • Was doing some searching around, found this for $399.20 when using the code "POSTIE" at checkout - seems decently high spec'd and would be able to run a few dozen chrome tabs at once along with office.

I can't highly recommend the Lenovo ThinkPad series enough. Even if it refurbished, this will suit you perfectly within' your budget.

Otherwise, if you must have something new. Have a look at this
