Microsoft Surface Pro 6 Pricing

Hi all,

Been in the market for a tablet for a while. I don't own anything Apple so I've been trying to avoid getting an iPad and I don't hear good things about Android tablets much so I've been keeping an eye on the Surface Pro series.

Came across this at The Good Guys and thought it seemed like a pretty good deal given the keyboard goes for about $150-200 which I'd be buying anyway.

Thoughts on this price for the bundle? Looks like it's been around this mark in the past. Or is it worth waiting a couple of months to see if prices drop when the inevitable 7 series is announced? Looks like the 6 series was announced early October.

EDIT: Just saw it's the same price for the same bundle at JB HIFI too. Guess maybe they've already started to clear stock.

Just because you don't have anything apple doesn't mean you can't go an iPad, my house is mostly android. Have 2 apple products because they serve us well, an iPad and an apple TV. Depending on what you're using the tablet for. Hard to justify that price if it's going to be netflix/browsing/social media and not much else.

Have an iPad pro 9.7" from 2 years ago, never missed a beat.

If you plan on going for the surface pro I'd definitely wait if it's close to the yearly cycle.

    • Yeah, I am still a bit tempted to get an iPad. It will mostly be used for watching videos & reading comics.

Think I'll wait until October to see how low the prices go for the 6 series.

mostly be used for watching videos & reading comics.

I manage both Surface Pros and iPads in my job. Each are excellent for what they are designed for.

Without doubt however, the smoothness, the general ease-of-use, relaibility, etc of IOS on the iPad would be vastly better for your described purpose.

On the other hand, if you need PC-type capability, Word, Excel, USB devices, etc, etc, then the SP will be more suited.

As an IT professional I am always impressed with the iPad. We have original series still running and doing their jobs. I think one reason sales have tapered in recent years has been the lack of necessity for users to upgrade their iPads. And their general reliability.

        • Interesting, thanks. Do you by any chance manage Galaxy Tabs also?

          • @Madrical: Yes, I have a few.

I would suggest, unless you have a compelling need for Android, go with an iPad equivalent.

I have tried (many times) to switch to one of our Galaxy Tabs, but the overall 'user experience' is just so much smoother and more, well… easier, on the iPad.

New, if it is, say $600 (eg, iPad) vs $450 (Galaxy) to me it's a no-brainer. But, if it's $800 vs $350, then it's much closer.

Even a reconditioned iPad Air 2 though, I think, would be superior to even the most recent Android equivalent.

Of course, if it is playing the latest games, or you need hugely extendable USB/SD storage, etc, then maybe the equation balances more.

My experience with the Surface Pro have been resoundingly positive. I currently have a Surface Pro 3, having purchased it in 2014 (I think). Hasn't missed a beat. The wife had an original Surface Pro, provided by work. When she returned it, on retirement, I replaced it with a Surface Pro 5 - which she loves.
I bought the Pro 3 (with keyboard) for use with MS Office, email, browsing, streaming. It has worked really well for these purposes. The Po 5 is used for browsing, email, minor games and streaming.
Work provided me with an iPad. I used it for some note taking, email and browsing. I hated it as I came from a PC background, and found the proprietary connectors and expensive genuine parts/accessories infuriating.
If you already use the Apple OS, the iPad will work for streaming, email, browsing etc. However, if you are a Microsoft OS user, the Surface will seem more familiar.
